Pence tried to push forward legal discrimination policies against the LBGT community. It hurt the state publicly and monetarily. Stores in downtown Indianapolis had to put stickers on their windows stating they would NOT discriminate despite what the law told them they could do. It was a mess. It badly hurt the image of our community. Oh, it was also just plain wrong.
Mike Pence is not popular here. In what is a conservative state, he was only a 50/50 bet for re-election. This is why he jumped on the Trump ticket. It was better for his political career to drop out of the Governors race than stay in and risk losing.
Barack Obama won Indiana in 2008. Despite not campaigning here at all in 2012, he was not blown out by any means. Indiana has put 1 conservative democratic Senator into the Senate. And this year with Bayh on the ticket, its 50/50 that Indiana could actually have 2 Democratic senators in the USA Senate in 2017.
No. Indiana is not Massachusetts or California. But its not quite as conservative as its national reputation suggests.
For 2016, Hillary Clinton opened her first campaign office here this week. This shows, she will at least give the state a shot. That is a good sign for chances in November.

However, I am very happy to be gone from that backwards state. Why do the people of Indiana continue to elect him and others like him? He represents the majority of Hoosiers.

Then they get pissed off when everything goes to shit. They should get a clue, but they just blame liberals for all their problems.
