(2,902 posts)It's a mental illness. It isn't a court-ordered death sentence.

(6,045 posts)I'm a extremely harsh critic of the police & how they act in a lot of cases especially when it comes to how they treat minorities but in this case they did a good job & the man lived. Hopefully he will get some help. Not every police shooting is unwarranted & in this case he did not unload his weapon in the guy despite the fact he kept coming at him.

Good job? What you were applauding was a turkey shoot. Should never have happened.
But people prefer a show, as long as they think they are above such a thing.
Cost of not caring: Nowhere to go:
Liz Szabo, USA TODAY
More than half a million Americans with serious mental illness are falling through the cracks of a system in tatters, a USA TODAY special report shows.
The mentally ill who have nowhere to go and find little sympathy from those around them often land hard in emergency rooms, county jails and city streets. The lucky ones find homes with family. The unlucky ones show up in the morgue.
"We have replaced the hospital bed with the jail cell, the homeless shelter and the coffin," says Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Pa., a child psychologist leading an effort to remodel the mental health system. "How is that compassionate?"
States looking to save money have pared away both the community mental health services designed to keep people healthy, as well as the hospital care needed to help them heal after a crisis.

(4,832 posts)You have identified the issue as clearly as possible. Cops are dealing with it daily and the results are unsurprisingly bad.

(5,417 posts)The guy came at him with a knife. He fired one shot. If he did nothing the cop might be dead.
A few minutes later more cops came, and tazed him, then took him to the hospital. I don't see the problem?

(15,882 posts)more money from jailing and murdering the population. Fixing them and providing relief is considered overhead, and is thus to be avoided.
Within that context he did what he was paid to do. Just like many others up and down the boulevard.
