Big talker, real mean mouth, but trembly and kinda lost in the world. Almost like the bicyclist is a symbol for some other life problem he's having.

Maybe that's what's going on with every Trumplette. Just afraid of everything. Afraid of life.

When I ride, I do wonder about the subset of people who throw things, shout or gratuitously lean on their horn, when they see a cyclist. It's really weird behavior and it seems that the very sight of a cyclist inspires some kind of fearful rage.

I live in Davis, which is so ultra-bike friendly that someone like that old guy would just fall over and die from constant rage. When I drive downtown (which is not often, because it's a nightmare for cars), I expect to spend triple (more, actually) the amount of time it would take to drive the same distance in Woodland, where all the white Dodge 4x4's live. And I'm proud of that fact.

...is that when a driver pulls a stupid move and wants to blame a cyclist for it, they often don't realize the simple fact that (a) they've been sitting in a car for a while and (b) the cyclist has a lot of adrenalin going, and is already warmed up. Getting out of the car in order to go after the cyclist is not a good move.

I live in a semi-rural area with twisting, two lane roads, steep grades, and infrequent shoulders. Speed limits average around 45mph. California has a relatively new law requiring motorists give bikers 4' of space.

That means I often cannot legally pass a bicycle if he/she is in the lane, as I would have to cross the double yellow. And beyond legality, its just plain stupid to cross the yellow line on a blind corner.

This is very frustrating when you're trying to get somewhere, but end up stuck behind a bicyclist who insists on asserting his right to the lane. There are other routes available, yet they seem to like the beauty and surroundings associated with curvy mountain roads. Jah help you if you get caught behind an entire club!

If a biker cannot keep his tire within a narrow band of several inches, as in on the right side of the white line, then they don't have any business being on that road. Its not that difficult, but does require paying attention. Perhaps the rare commuter is the exception, who has no other form of transportation, but either way, just like an equestrian choosing to ride near a dirt bike track, bikers who choose to ride under such conditions are assuming a high risk, just for their recreation, at the expense of the rest of the community who is just trying to get to work. My heart goes out to that guy I see, using a recumbent hand-pedaled bicycle, but why the fuck is he riding during the morning rush hour? Picture this guy slowly trundling up a hill, with a line of cars stretching around the hills behind him, mostly kids trying to get to the local high school.

And some areas have a very aggressive, "biker mafia" kind of crowd. As in the kind of people who will call your chief at the fire department and file a formal complaint that you were driving the fire engine too fast when you passed them on your way to a call. So sure, the angry guy in the video is whacked out crazy, but it is very possible the bicyclist pulled some stupid shit himself. I mean, he even knows the vehicle code.

Ummm... Yeah. Fucking people INSISTING on following the law.

Take a look at the end of the video. Do you see what's painted on the road there?

Yeah, I follow the law when I'm riding my bike and when I'm driving my car. If obeying the law too much for you to handle, then get off the fucking road.

Let me try again.

Even though you are able to do something legally, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a good idea, especially if it involves risk of serious bodily injury.

Yes, you can legally ride those mountain roads to which I refer, but you do have a much greater chance of being in a serious collision, so why not just take a different route? Why do you have to ride to the left of the white line and yell at me if I pass too closely? Yes, you and your lycra-clad peacock friends can legally pull a Critical Mass-style takeover of the local thru-route, and stack up a dozen cars behind you, but is that really a good idea?

There's way too many shrines to bicyclists in my area. But go ahead, assert your right to ride on all roads. Freedom!

My partner gets upset when we have someone weaving in and out and passing cars in the tiny space between our car and parked cars.

Several years ago, my partner was involved in an incident involving a bike. The bicyclist was traveling the wrong way out of a one-way side street and broadsided our car and went over the hood. The biker apologized profusely and offered to pay for the damage. A witness called police. The police didn't issue any tickets. The cops didn't even make a report.

My partner comes home and tells me what happened. I said I hate to tell you this but don't be surprised if we get sued. He looks at me like I have a third eye. Are you crazy? The accident wasn't my fault. Hmmm mmm.

The next day, the bicyclist calls and says his family says he "should go get checked out" and we should call our insurance.

Someone informed the guy of the bag of money floating around in the air.

A friend of mine was hit by a car while on her bike. It was a hit and run. The lady scurried in to her condo building and wouldn't answered her door when the police came (the doorman snitched on the driver and showed cops security footage he wasn't supposed to provide). The next day, my friend gets a call from an attorney. Thinking the attorney is the driver's insurance she says all she wants is her medical bills and ambulance paid. The guy says no I'm YOUR attorney. Apparently he got bird dogged from the police report or ambulance. The attorney tells her this can be worth $30k on her end if she goes to his doctors.

Our agent says they settled with the guy that hit our car. Probably a small amount to head off the attorneys. My guess would be $3000 to $5000 to make it go away.

Nobody wants to hurt someone or be involved in killing someone - no matter whose fault it is. My partner now gets really anxious around bikes and some of that turns in to hostility.

I've gotten to the point now I don't allow bikes to pass me on the right between parked cars. I'm not going to be responsible for someone falling under my tires. I pull over to cut off access at stop signs - typically on side streets where bikes are keeping up with traffic by blowing stop signs. I had a biker go over his handle bars in front of my truck once and that was scary enough. Not in the mood to play you pass me and I pass you and you pass me.

It's really surprising how many drivers have the exact same attitude.

And, I'm not interested in "well, bike riders....." because every adult bike rider is ALSO a driver. If you don't do both, then you don't have a full perspective on how there are drivers who are positively hostile to cyclists.

Other than the OP, this is the only video in this thread I haven't seen.

This one is a goodie. The British are so quaint and polite.

She probably had no chance to see him after the initial accident. And she's so apologetic about it. It's a real contrast the the road-raging old surfer.

It didn't matter that I was driving over the speed limit. I wasn't going fast enough. I pulled over to let them go around me, and then they would slow down.

I'm sure they heard stereotypes of Prius drivers. If they heard they're liberals, they happened to be correct in my case!

He wanted to bash the bicyclist, but as he said, he wouldn't because of witnesses.

He apologized later, but he would have hit the guy, but held back. The driver is not a decent guy who made a mistake. He is more likely a violent lying person who was caught, and now nice and embarrassed. The snarl was not an acting job. He was pissed.

The bicycle guy kept his head, and was probably scared, but the driver's voice was the one shaken, and scared of what he might do.
