Democratic Senator Joe Manchin (a true DINO) is the father of Mylan CEO Heather Bresch, the woman who ultimately made the decision to approve a 400% price hike for life-saving EpiPens. The revolving door is never ending. Ring of Fires Farron Cousins discusses this.

(28,270 posts)2 million and change a year like she was getting at the start? The poor thing.
18 million a year is sooo much better and all those worried parents of little kids who could die in minutes without epipens will surely come up with the $$$!
Hey its a new day, lets jack up the price of epipens again!!!
Its capitalism baby!

My son is deadly allergic to wasp stings. He has insurance (not very good) and is not eligible for ACA. He pays this outrageous price for two pens each year. If he has to use them, then he has to purchase more. This is an abomination and everyone should be up in arms about pharma pricing. I urge everyone here to contact their congressmen and demand something be done to stop this price gouging.

(1,241 posts)do these things expire or does your son have to use it at least once a year. Because if they get less potent or ineffective after 6 months sounds like another pharma scam.

(101 posts)Thanks for your post. I should have said two pens once each year. If he has to use them, then he has to buy more.

(15,682 posts)what symtoms your son had to know he was allergic to wasps? I've tried to find information about that, wasps, specifically, but have never found anything of value.

(101 posts)When my son was small (about 5 or 6? - He's now 41) he had been stung by wasps several times. It's my understanding that the body's reaction to the bee venom builds up each time you're stung. Your body's reaction to the venom, not the sting itself, is actually the cause of the allergic reaction. The first time my son reacted, he had weals (raised, red spots) and was itching. We called the doctor and he told us to give him Benadryl. We started to the doctor, but his symptoms started to subside.
We lived in the country and my son loved the outdoors. Each time he was stung his symptoms worsened. He was prescribed an anakit, which didn't cost much. Then the doctor said he was too small to use the anakit, and prescribed the epi-pen. When stung, he would get the weals, itch, and his throat would start to close up and he would start to have difficulty breathing. He would use the epi-pen and we would rush to the hospital. We started taking him to an allergy doctor who tested him for allergies to 5 different bees. My son showed allergy to all 5, but the wasp was by far the worst. Allergy shots were started, but his allergy was so bad that the shots never worked very well. He stopped taking them when he was about 15. He has lived with this threat most of his life and he carries two pens with him at all times.
It is outrageous that he has to pay this much for the pens when, according to recent tv reporting, they cost about about $1 to produce. Such price gouging should not be tolerated.

(2,522 posts)"In 2007, Mylan secured rights to the nearly fifty year old EpiPen, used to treat anaphylaxis (severe allergic reactions).[29] Bresch advocated for broader availability of EpiPens in public places and helped pass the School Access to Emergency Epinephrine Act which made epinephrine more accessible in schools.[17][30] Between 2009 and May 2016, under Bresch's tenure as Mylan president, Mylan raised the price of a set of pens by nearly 500 %, from $103.50 to $608.61.[29] Proxy filings show that from 2007 to 2015, Bresch's compensation went from $2,453,456 to $18,931,068, a 671 percent increase. During the same period, EpiPen prices went from $56.64 to $317.82, a 461 percent increase, according to data provided by Connecture.[31]
Under Bresch's leadership, Mylan made several acquisitions, including a $1.6 billion acquisition of Agila Specialties.[30] A $5.3 billion acquisition of Abbott Laboratories was announced in 2014[32] in conjunction with plans to re-organize the company in the Netherlands and move its domicile to a country with lower taxes.[33] The New York Times said there was something "disconcerting" about a company that benefits from large government contracts renouncing their citizenship for tax benefits.[28] Bresch stated that Mylan would reduce its effective tax rate by four percent in the first year after the merger and later by more than 5 percent, but said that the merger was being driven primarily by strategic merits rather than tax avoidance.[28] Bresch said it was a difficult choice to make, but it had to be done to maintain competitiveness against pharmaceutical manufacturers that had already executed similar inversion strategies."

(5,902 posts)That redneck Manchin is trying to deprive people of Canadian alternatives (which of course usually cost about one tenth).
Thanks a million - or, I should say, 18 million - for this background. I'd lock them both up, and have them share a cell with one of their many victims (a big and burly one).
