(365 posts)Georgia is a light red state that could be competitive.

(129,530 posts)Georgia is 32% black (meaning ~ 3,000,000 with probably half that being voting age) and there is no reason why it has descended into the red-dumb that it has other than millions not voting.

(365 posts)Dems just don't compete there because they don't need it. The theory is if a light red state like Georgia goes blue certainly states like Ohio and Florida will. I wish Clinton would make a major play for it though. It would help down state dems and make trump worry about another state.

(129,530 posts)they will to some extent - just as it has been noted the potential to make a play for AZ. However the efforts have been very conservative so as not to expand too much knowing the Kochs and Adelsons are out there with gobs of PAC $$$ to spend to derail. I.e., they want to make sure that they hold the Obama states with enough margin (having had visions of 2004) to lock in the win.
But I do hope that building that 50-state strategy will come after this - given the demographics changes of states like GA, AZ & even TX, so it really is up to the party to reboot and look at a bigger picture for the next mid-terms - which in some cases, will include getting some state offices filled and ready for the 2020 census and redistricting. The focus should be on retaking state governorships and legislatures in order to have a say on redrawing lines.

(2,479 posts)Means toward purple, a lot of blue filtering in, or do I have it wrong?

(365 posts)I would consider Oklahoma, Alabama, Mississippi dark red for examples.

(2,479 posts)As my old gym teacher once commented about the color gym shorts he wanted us to wear, is "Bright Red." The reddest of reds.
Dark red, as I read this, considering Democrats are BLUE, and when Blue begins to filter into red, it becomes darker purple, means Democrats are getting closer and closer to taking over the state. It'd be simpler to just call it purple.
My thinking is, it may be closer than some southern states, because of the huge number of blacks in the Atlanta area, but I doubt it'll go this year. Black people are still feeling the "sting" of being called predators by Hillary, at least the younger, more informed black people.

(129,530 posts)Ummm.... I doubt that given that we have been called worse well before the Clinton, Rodham, & Trump families got off their respective boats. I have very very close relatives in Atlanta (and surrounding 'burbs) and they intend on voting for Clinton.
I think the issue is where many blacks in the south reside - i.e., not necessarily concentrated in the cities as they are in the north, and getting to voting locations may require an effort.
