In Passionate Speech, Detroit Teen Details Importance of Education to Betsy DeVos

On Tuesday, Betsy DeVos, 59, President-elect Donald J. Trump’s pick for education secretary, stood before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee for a rare evening confirmation hearing.
She faced a broad spectrum of questions that ranged from issues regarding early childhood education to the Obama administration’s crackdown on college sexual assaults.

DeVos, a Michigan advocate for school choice and vouchers, sparked great debate with her responses about her competency regarding the position, with many taking to social media to decry her confirmation as education secretary.
Protesters, many of them from Michigan, attended the hearing. Among them was 17-year-old Dannah Wilson, a senior at Cornerstone Leadership and Business High School. She had come in an effort to represent “students across Detroit. I just honestly want to know how she feels and responds to these questions.”
