(3,074 posts)Firing missiles and dropping bombs is never a good solution to complex and complicated problems we don't understand.
Every American should see this but few will take the time.
Thank you and peace always.

(3,847 posts)America has zero moral authority in the Middle East. We have been a thorn a weapon of mass destruction to that place in the world for 50 years. Is this like the Cuba policy? Break it so they can't make it. Unspeakable.

(10,778 posts)It's not the "UN" Peace Council; it's an activist group called the U.S. Peace Council. I'm not claiming to know, but they have been accused of being a Russian front group associated with the Communist Party USA.

(17,006 posts)Disturbing that the header in the video says it's the UN.

FWIW supposedly Putin made a deal with Former President Obama to "Dispose of" chemical weapons in Syria. How do we NOT know this is how President Putin decided to dispose of the weapons?
What I, personally, find most disturbing, with the exception of the war mongering and death of innocents, is a rampant willingness to knee jerk react. What gives me hope is our willingness to question. But before one decides to pass judgment, I recommend research.
I look forward to seeing your response in the original thread. Perhaps you can expound on your perceived level of disturbance there.

(17,006 posts)Sadly, I think it may have been an effort to lift sagging ratings which, IMO, makes it even worse. Knee-jerk stupid is bad, planned stupid is so much worse. I think the information in the video is very, very interesting but for it to claim to be a product of the UN is simply inaccurate. It appears parts of it were a presentation to the UN and that video can be found at:
http://uspeacecouncil.org/
The producer of the video we are talking about is Very Dicey which has a home on You-tube. There is a definite bias to the videos posted there, think Mike Cernovich.
I think this is the agreement you are referring to: (Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons)
https://www.opcw.org/news/article/opcw-director-general-welcomes-agreement-on-syrian-chemical-weapons/
I wasn't familiar with OPCW and learned a lot checking out their web-site.

This panel smacks of Russian propaganda. How do I know, because I know people from Syria who DO NOT support Assad in any way shape or form. There is a civil war. Is Saudi Arabia funding it... yes, I'm sure they are. Is Assad a butcher of his own people... you bet he is.

(6,344 posts)It is possible they were led to believe this wrong information and then turned around sharing it. So, they could be victims of believing propaganda fed to them. It is interesting to notice they each are speaking with an underlying fear. Do you notice the dry mouth and fast talking, it is like a person in fight/flight on a low level.
I would stand by the work of Democracy Now!. They are of great integrity in reporting and their work has been in-depth about the many facets of the Syrian war, that did begin from citizen dissent of the government. It grew in complexity as many factions took advantage of the chaos. There are some 11 different warring factions in Syria from what I have heard. This is not a simple matter.
If Assad is so innocent, why is he not in front of a camera, day-in and day-out, asking for help for his people?
Regarding Democracy Now! - it is odd they referred to their reporting, saying they are wrong. Democracy Now! might be the only media doing in-depth Syrian reporting, is why they are trying to discredit them.

(12,412 posts)Thank you for the post and the wake up.
Questions I have are why are there so many Syrian refugees, are they just fleeing these infiltrating terrorists or is Assad actually at war with the Syrian people who would support his removal?
William Seger
(10,778 posts)There is no "UN Peace Council" and the claims made in the first minute about a "united Syria" fighting against outside agitators is abject BS.

(8,401 posts)The speakers are not UN observers, and the grou pis not affiliated with the UN in any way. Whoever put this video on YouTube is deliberately trying to suggest that these people are speaking under the auspices of the UN, when they are not.
I will be the first to agree that the situation in Syria is much, much more complex than we have been led to believe, and that is the height of folly to rush in to topple Assad./. But I was sudpicious of this video as soon as I watched it. A dear friend of mine was a career UN diplomat who was killed when the UN headquarters located at the Canal Hotel in Baghdad was bombed in August of 2003,and I have met some of the folks who were his colleagues. I can tell you that UN diplomats are MUCH more measured in their public statements than these people are in the video. This panel, by contrast, is almost aggressively pro-Assad, and their attempt to portray him as some populist humanitarian is almost cartoonish.

(2,065 posts)I should have read your posting before I posted my own. That explains their glaring omission of not explaining WHY the alleged corporate media disinformation campaign is going on, and what exactly is the payoff for the corporate interests regarding Syria. I'm still gonna do that Google search about Syrian oil reserves, though. We DO have hard video evidence of Assad's forces gassing all those kids, don't we? If you try to reconcile that with what these Pseudo-UN diplomats are saying, than we'd have to conclude that Assad is some kind of arbitrary, capricious and even schizophrenic ruler who gasses the kids he doesn't like, while sending all the rest on to get free education and healthcare.

(2,065 posts)In other words, what exactly is it that the corporations are after??? This, I felt, was the one core thing that was left out of this video. Is it just because independent, non-client states in the Middle East are, in themselves, seen as geopolitical threats to corporate interests? So - where's the oil (assuming that there is any)? That will be my next Google search...
It's like that old Firesign Theater comedy album: Everything You Know Is Wrong! Just remember - the bad guys are the good guys, and vice versa. But what's behind this all so pervasive corporate media campaign of propaganda and disinformation???
panfluteman
(2,065 posts)To the tune of some 2.5 billion barrels of proven oil reserves. Although these are comparatively modest oil reserves for the region, Syria has added geopolitical strategic importance as an oil pipeline region. So, the Saudis send in their Wahhabi agitators and guerillas to foment a war in Syria, so that this oil potential cannot be adequately developed, which would mean more competition for Saudi Arabia, I suppose. Yeah, these corporate interests ain't too hard to figure out. Just follow the oil, dummy!
