Remember this movie, The Madness of King George? It's suddenly become very interesting again, as American goes through what Britain went through in the 1790s. How the leaders and parliamentarians of a military and industrial superpower try to function, and keep the empire running, while the man at the center of government is MAD. Britain went through this, and it proved that the government institutions of a superpower can continue functioning normally, more or less, even with a madman theoretically in control of them.
The people around the mad King simply have to be careful about what he sees, and what he is in a position to do. They have to try to keep him distracted and insulated from the business of governing as much as possible. It this movie, Ian Holm plays the doctor whose job it is to hang around the King at all time, and cough, or clear his throat to remind the King that he's starting to act a little too crazy. The King whisperer. I'm starting to think that's what Jared Kushner's job is. He's managed to land himself an impressive sounding job....minister in charge of EVERYTHING. But the REAL purpose of his job is just to be around Trump at all times, and hopefully distract him when he starts acting too crazy.
That was the first thing I thought of when I saw the picture of the 'Trump Situation Room' (below). Everybody else is looking at the screen, but Jared is watching Trump. Ready to distract him if he starts to act crazy, or starts reaching for his Tweeter.

The whole thing is truly bizarre.

(16,423 posts)In his forced isolation he turns to literature. He reads Shakespeare's "King Lear". King George realizes, that he cannot BE a king due to his madness, but that he must PLAY and ACT like one for the sake of his country.

(14,014 posts)rolling over at the first "sign" of normalcy:
"He can give a good speech" (while reading a teleprompter)
"His Supreme Court nominee is so upstanding"
"He looks so strong and presidential" (after firing $60 million dollars worth of missiles at a mostly empty airfield)
etc etc etc
(Thanks, TB9090, for the movie reference! Ian Holm is outstanding as usual.)
