I just needed a little pick-me-up from how awful I feel that there is a resident in the White House and not a President! We WILL get there again.

(1,369 posts)I hate to say this, but I HATE everything about Trump and everyone connected to him.
Thank you, demmiblue, for this reminder of the respect and reverence that most Americans have for our White House.

(36,865 posts)Trump has no reverence or appreciation for history and/or art in general. His recent dump comment reminded me of this:
But then, according to journalist Harry Hurt III in his book Lost Tycoon, Trump discovered that taking out the sculptures would delay demolition by two weeks. He wasnt willing to wait. On his orders, the demolition workers cut up the grillwork with acetylene torches, Hurt wrote. Then they jackhammered the friezes, dislodged them with crowbars, and pushed the remains inside the building, where they fell to the floor and shattered in a million pieces.
The art world was shocked. Architectural sculpture of this quality is rare and would have made definite sense in our collections, Ashton Hawkins, the vice president and secretary of the Mets board of trustees, told the New York Times. Robert Miller, a gallery owner who had agreed to assess the friezes, told the paper that the reliefs are as important as the sculptures on the Rockefeller building. Theyll never be made again.
...
Trumpposing as spokesman John Baron, one of the fake alter egos he used to speak to the press throughout his careertold the Times that he had the friezes appraised and found they were without artistic merit and werent worth the $32,000 he supposedly would have had to pay to remove them intact. Can you imagine the museum accepting them if they were not of artistic merit? Hawkins said in response.

(1,698 posts)It's because it's a reflection of his personal contempt for America not heralding him as royalty. The White House is beautiful, not gaudy!

(3,282 posts)There aren't gold tinted and gilt mirrors on every surface showing Trump his own face over and over and over. I mean, I've seen those photos of his gaudy as hell penthouse in Trump Tower New York. That's his idea of luxury. If I went to a luxury hotel decorated like that, I'd think the 60's vomited faux luxury all over the place.
I'm glad the Trump Tower here in Toronto divested itself of the Trump name and will become a St. Regis.

(5,810 posts)and bit him on the ass. I sooooo miss our previous POTUS and his family. They were a real family who were such wonderful role models to our citizens. People from around the world admired and respected them. It is still hard for me to stomach the fact the tRump squandered all that good will built up by the Obamas in just 6 months. It will be a very long time before the dignity of the office and the home of our First Family is restored. Makes me angry and sad.

(23,123 posts)He has no knowledge or appreciation of history or symbolism, whatsoever. The only thing he cares about is himself and getting more money and since the WH isn't totally tacky with gold he doesn't like it and calls it a dump. He's really expressing the state of his mind since he's far too stupid to appreciate the elegance and history steeped into every room there.

(3,417 posts)Wisdom, derermination, humility. What the f@ck have we let happen?
History will not look kindly on our generation. We boomers partied through our youth, then immediately shed responsibility for maintaining what was built since 1776. We ate the seed corn.
When our parents came home from WW2, they lived by modest means, and rolled up their sleeves to build schools, churches, parks, and highways as a legacy to be left to us. Our generation let it all rot.
The election of His Trumpness is a logical result of a generation who saw the need for the monster truck for trips to the grocery store as a higher priority than investing in human and physical capital. The Donald is the high priest of the Church of Consumption.
The next crisis will come as us boomers face retirement with inadequate savings. The demands to bail us out will be great.
As His Trumpness walks in the footsteps of Lincoln, he sees "a dump". His corrupt and nihilistic world view is not capable of seeing value in the elegance and history that the White House represents. This is but one example of why the man is unworthy to walk it's halls.

Be so disrespectful for those that once occupied it, and were part of History? Those men of goodwill named Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelt (both), Wilson, Truman, Eisenhower and on and on...
Those that made it possible to you disgusting clown to reach the position you have now and that you are so conscientiously and meticoulously shredding the dignity and the credibility?

Just as my far better half is better than me, so is Obama an example and inspiration to all of of those who care about the wellbeing of all others -- not just the wealthy.
President Obama and Michelle, my far better half and I would be delighted to buy you a great and healthy (with kudos to FLOTUS, Michelle) dinner!!
Jeez -- we sure miss your presence.
