(205,467 posts)Learning other languages isn't a priority in this country the way it is across the world. Americans usually assume that those in other countries are going to speak English and chances are they're right. Shortly before the USSR fell, I visited there with my (other) grandmother who was a part of a peace group. Most everyone born after WWII spoke English - or other languages. I had a conversation with a Russian girl sitting next to me in the theater who was also fluent in French and Italian, kept apologizing that she "never finished" her English...

(41,831 posts)and I was even reported once, on DU for speaking in Japanese. The Jury had my Japanese words hidden. But that's always the thing. When I would go into a chat room and speak Japanese with a friend, we were always booted from the room. Its like if we are speaking in another language we must BE TALKING ABOUT THE OTHER PEOPLE IN THE ROOM. its a giant WTF...no, people are not speaking in secret about you, they are conversing in another language to speak in normal terms.

(205,467 posts)We're becoming increasingly global every day. It's another way that Americans are being left behind - other countries emphasize languages in the grades. I was lucky, we had French classes starting in junior high. But the first high school I went to offered French, Spanish or Latin, that's it. And high school is kinda late to start. The American guide we had on the Russian trip was of Estonian descent - and spoke seven languages! Russian being one of them. In any big city here, you'll hear numerous languages spoken. Parents who are bi or tri lingual need to make a point of teaching their kids at home. I wish my mother did...

(41,831 posts)There were many students there with me, but by mid Semester most of the Anime fans found it just too hard and said, screw it, they didn't need to learn Japanese especially when there were already perfectly good translated anime or dubbed anime in English. I seriously wanted and was motivated to learn. That was the huge difference.

(58,785 posts)Our son gave what was probably about a cumulative half hour to the idea of learning Danish himself as part of this, but... She also speaks what is apparently a Castilian Spanish because her mother was half Spanish, but not as fluently. Sigh...
My commuter college back in California had students from well over 100 nations, and to be able to speak 5 languages was common, more not at all uncommon.
Loved the "cute" clip, thanks.
