(29,226 posts)The shooter emptied many (perhaps more than 10) large capacity magazines using assault rifle(s) into a crowd, killing at least 58 and injuring over 500.
What other facts do we need to arrest anyone trafficking or owning such a weapon?
I have been hunting many many times (with my father and his friends)... never once did anyone use such a weapon for hunting... or need a large capacity magazine.

(33,982 posts)This was an actual Assault Rifle (as you said) and there are VERY few of them in the country, they are licensed, and registered, unlike most firearms. They are tightly controlled by federal law, nation wide.
I doubt we are going to see any changes in the laws about the sort of weapon he used. They're barely possess-able at all at this point, and command collectors prices more than 10x retail.

(29,226 posts)many "assault" weapons (not machine guns) can be modified to full automatic with kits and a moderate amount of skill.

(33,982 posts)of metalwork. It's harder than you might think.
Ones made before 1986, sure. Modification is basically 'replace the guts with the full-auto parts it was meant for', but those parts aren't available for sale anywhere, except perhaps the black market.
My AR is missing metal so that it cannot be converted to a M-16. I would have to fabricate or purchase all new internal parts to change it over, and if I do it wrong, it pretty much explodes in my hands after a couple shots. The bolt closure timing is nanoseconds. If the round goes off and the bolt isn't closed, you might lose your face and hands and other pieces of your body you consider important.
After 1986, the M-16 equivalent parts don't fit inside the AR's by law. To be lawful for sale after 1986 it can't readily accept conversion parts, and you can't just file something down or drill a hole to accomplish it, or it's not eligible for legal sale. Most manufacturers chose different receiver widths, such that you couldn't machine it down, or just add a washer or something stupid like that. A couple manufacturers didn't take the law seriously and ended up severely fined and/or out of business.
Edit: sorry, on the type of weapon, I am basing my assumption on the videos that have come out with audio of the shots fired. I don't think someone with a slide stock or bump firing, or the 'hand crank' modification could maintain that cyclic rate. It's either the real deal, or as you say, a modified firearm.

(3,384 posts)immigrants already know that it's illegal to sneak across the U.S. border.
Exactly HOW BIG OF AN IDIOT does one have to be Sarah not to understand how guns can be BROUGHT across city limits (municipal borders) so easily that LOCAL gun laws really make no difference?
Really? THAT BIG OF AN IDIOT???
