And it's not unusual for the new president to call on more experienced former presidents for advice. LBJ also turned to Eisenhower as an advisor, Jimmy Carter only had Nixon and Ford, but he found his former opponent very helpful for dealing with Congress, and George HW Bush took advantage of the resources of the Carter Center. The current occupant has proven to be clueless and self-important sorehead - and has regularly attacked both "sides."

I can remember fooling around at the dinner table as Kennedy broadcast his Missile Crisis speech to the nation - my mom said, "You should pay attention and remember this, because this is practically a Declaration of War."

I even remember President Clinton, after the death of Richard Nixon, detailing how Nixon had, in the months before his death, been counseling Clinton on how to guide the United States through the post-Cold War transition. As Nixon-hating as I've always been, I was deeply affected by the vision of him applying his years of experience and relationships, quietly and behind the scenes, out of a patriotic duty to the nation that had shunned him.

This is how the Grown Ups handle it.

...but he was no diplomatic lightweight. Clinton would have been a fool to ignore him.

that the "Trumpsters" don't even have a clue as to what they've (we've) lost in terms of quality of leadership.

one of them Supreme Commander of all European-North Africa Operations, who dealt with the USSR henchmen at wars end and thereafter. An awesome knowledge base. Country over Party.

I always hear music in the background: "We'll meet again/Don't know how/Don't know when/But I know we'll meet again some sunny day . . ."
