This week's A Minute with Jay video is on the upcoming anniversary of Social Security, which was signed into law almost 77 years ago. It is one of our nation's most successful programs, serving 451,000 West Virginians - including 41,000 children where one or both parents are deceased, disabled, or retired - and more than 50 million Americans each year.

(129 posts)Social security is something many people take for granted, but if the tea part would have it's way it will be gone.
What burns me is how I pay in to social security, and have some of it going to righties who talk about socialism and want to take social security away from me when I need it.

This was back when everybody knew how Social Security works. The current generation of workers pays for that last one. This is why it's so important to see to it that the next generation is paid well and it's also why there has been a concerted effort on the part of the powers that be to make sure they aren't. They've hated Social Security since it was created and somebody figured the best way to kill it was to pay dirt and then tell everyone the government was stealing from them. The Right Wing claims Social Security is a "Nanny State" program where the government doesn't trust you to hold on to your own money for when you retire so it takes it from you against your will and holds it for you and pays it back in dribs and drabs assuming you live that long. If you die before you're 65 they just keep it for themselves. There's always the "take it from you at gunpoint" line tossed in too.
Trying to tell them it doesn't work that way is like talking to a brick wall and trying to explain that there are housewives who have never worked a day in their lives at an actual paycheck type job that get Social Security just makes them hate women. Then there's trying to explain survivors benefits, how your wife and kids will be cared for if you die makes them claim churches already do that, or DID until the government butted it.
Just makes you want to qualify them for disability,...and create a work of art...
