Published on Apr 13, 2018
Do we really want to live in a country where students have to go to the hospital because of stress over paying for college? Or should we learn from other countries and make public colleges and universities tuition-free while also lowering the outrageous levels of student debt?

I vote to make all education available to everyone. What better way to jettison our country into a future where education counts and is useful.

(25,858 posts)don't look very closely at what all that borrowing will mean.
I keep on telling kids and their parents, if you can't afford to pay for college outright, and if you don't get good scholarship money to the school of your choice, start out at the local community college. Then transfer to an instate institution. If you have to, work and only attend part time. Yes, it will take longer to finish, but if you're earning decent money along the way, you can exit college debt free.
The other thing that's wrong is the push for everyone to get a four year degree with almost no thought about what kinds of jobs are at the end of that road. Which is again why the community colleges are so great, because they offer certificate programs that lead to real, decent jobs at the end.
