When 6th graders use the fuck word on a regular basis, it's time to get real about the intended shock value. The shock value been gone for many years, and along with several other words "banned" from polite discourse, it's just a combination of letters. If you're a Believer, using the Lord's name in vain should be worse, but not so much..., it seems. As an English major, originally, and now much further educated in terms of educational degrees and experience, I've often gotten into discussions with other professionals and friends as to why, if a term such as "sexual Intercourse" were used in place of "fuck"...well, we couldn't take offense...and how stupid would that be if we did? My parents were from the "greatest generation." My dad rarely swore publicly, in mixed company (my mom not at all), and worried a lot about their daughters being "ladylike." Many girls of my "Sixties" generation hated being (and the very term)"ladylike" and got pretty free with our language. Stop and think about words (such as racial epithets) that are REALLY offensive versus words that are only offensive because they're crude references to natural functions...and have stupidly attracted growing children just for shock value.
