(16,254 posts)Sounds like he's been using funds from the RNC anyway, so he might as well take it upfront. Am I wrong?

(9,350 posts)So, now we know why Republicans are so bad at balancing the government budget. They cannot even balance their own budgets. You should not expect someone who cannot balance his own budget to be able to balance someone else's budget, or a government budget.

(5,955 posts)But it doesn't sound like a failure to me! Sounds to me like Trump made himself $65,000 in one day, which was the whole idea!
I think Trump was more surprised than anybody when he got elected. But his whole goal of running for President in the first place was to boost publicity for his businesses, and make more money. Then, when he won, he figured, why not CONTINUE with that? What's the worse thing that can happen? I make a few million extra, and they end up IMPEACHING me?

(7,220 posts)I know a trump fan who, although he makes a very decent living wage:
-Doesn't have a checking account (banks are stealing my money!)
-Drives around a gas guzzling old Suburban and then complains all his money goes to gas
-Speaking of which, is a daily smoker/drinker, and buys just one day's worth of supplies at a time, meaning daily (sometimes TWICE daily trips to the more expensive "convenience" store despite point above about gas cost & shitty MPG)
-Burns his garbage instead of paying for trash pickup (I don't even know where to start)
-Doesn't believe in abortion or sex ed, has two girls who were pregnant by 18 YO and now on welfare
He's actually a very nice person who'd give you the shirt off his back, but can't see how his own behavior is causing his problems; actually think there's conspiracy everywhere. Oh, and only watches Fox.

it is just another mark of how misguided and misinformed the Right Wing is. You are right when you "don't even know where to start" in talking about your friend or any one of the Repukelicans. They think they can run a country when they lose Taxpayer money like they do. They walk around Washington and all they do is line their own pockets. Then they want to know why the Democrats are getting mad.

(14,494 posts)The collective lot of them - on an international scale - seem intent on instilling societies with morbid fear and so, many Americans like your friend are vulnerable. I've known several myself, and the experts say it's very difficult to reverse the damage. Wealthy people are using money we give them as profits from purchasing goods and services to fund fear campaigns via right-wing media.
That's an interesting story you shared. When I look back at my upbringing in a small Southern country town (50s and 60s), I see some good folks that would have been easily duped by our current right-wing media circus, but most would NOT. Back then, we had Cronkite, Huntley and Brinkley to set us straight with real facts and good old common sense prevailed. And, almost everyone took pride in getting a good education.
Somehow, at some time, we seem to have taken a collective dose of some drug that's made far too many of us allergic to knowledge, reasoning and civic duty. It would to take a lot of work and many decades to reverse that, if it's even possible. I just fear that so long as a number of billionaires are hell-bent on fear mongering and dumbing down our working class, nothing will change and it may get worse. If you have a solution, I'm all ears.

(52,317 posts)well, i imagine that there are a few variable expenses associated with hosting a fundraiser.
then again, i'm sure he'll stiff his suppliers, so not very much in the way of actual expenses....

(1,461 posts)High costs of Trump club, Fox News speaker created money-losing fundraiser
https://newjerseyglobe.com/section-2/morris-gop-nearly-broke/
Morris County Republicans lost money on their winter fundraiser at Trump National Golf Club and have a paltry $13,956 in their warchest, according to a report filed with the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission. The money-losing event and the low cash-on-hand heading into a potentially competitive general election is expected to be an issue in the June election for Morris County Republican Chairman. One of the candidates, Ronald DeFilippis, is the Finance Chairman for the county GOP. He faces Rob Zwigard in a race that has already turned nasty.
The county GOP organization raised $58,335 at an event that cost them more than $64,000. The spent $24,487 at Trump National and paid Fox News personality Greg Gutfeld $30,000 to speak. Republicans repaid a $10,000 loan from State Sen. from State Sen. Joseph Pennacchio (R-Montville), but still owe $10,000 to DeFilippis, who loaned the money to help make a down payment on Gutfelds appearance.
High cost fundraisers, like a party at Yankee Stadium last year where they spend nearly $5,700 on two ex-Yankee players to make brief appearances, have left Morris without the cash to defend what looks to be a serious challenge from Democrats at the county level this fall. Last year, Morris Republicans reported raising just $76,218 a relatively small amount for a county organization that hasnt lost a freeholder race in 45 years. According to ELEC reports, much of that was spent on fundraising costs and overhead and not on Republican campaigns.
State Sen. Anthony Bucco (R-Boonton) nearly lost his seat last year, winning just 52% against Democrat Lisa Bhimani. In 2018, two Morris County congressional seats are in danger of flipping Democratic: the 11th, where Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen is retiring, and the 7th, where Rep. Leonard Lance faces a tough re-election campaign. Three freeholder seats are up this fall, as well as what is becoming an interesting race for county clerk. Democrats havent elected a county clerk since before the Civil War, but a judges ruling last week that Republican incumbent Ann Grossi distributed an illegal memorandum showing her failure to understand state election law has made Democrat Shala Gagliardi a real candidate for the seat.
At the February fundraiser, Republicans teased potential donors with the idea that President Trump would attend as a surprise guest even asking for social security numbers in advance, something that would suggest a presidential appearance. Trump was at Mar-a-Lago and there was little possibility that he would be in New Jersey for Presidents Day weekend.
