I think not enough is being done on this phenomenon. It certainly is not being talked about on the MSM. And it should be.
Because for all our bold, sanctimonious hubris about how the Truth will always win in the end, there is actual proof, historical proof, that that is not necessarily true. That this method of firehose lying does actually work.
Case in point: Hillary Clinton. More than once topping the polls as the most admired woman in America. Bill was targeted early on when he was the one with power. Hillary was, for the most part, left alone. But as she rose in the Democratic party, so rose the level and frequency of outrageous conspiracy theories against her. Repeated and repeated for years. Not winning the primary in 2008 gave the Russians in collusion with the GOP eight more years to work that firehose.
Now, today, almost half of the country is convinced that Hillary, along with Bill, are corrupt to the core. Involved in some nefarious Deep State. That they had people murdered. That it was actually Hillary that has colluded with Putin. Even that Hillary, ......who has spent much of her public life, as well as within their foundation, working to help underprivileged children in the US and in the third world,.....is deeply involved in a child porn or prostitution business. It makes no sense, but we know now that The Big Lie is not just some quaint and stereotype of some past bad men's behaviours, it is a very real, very effective tool of any authoritarian leadership, no matter what era. In fact, one could argue that this new age of mass social media, it is even easier to spread. And could get much worse.
