(1,533 posts)More thrust than weight you can accelerate vertically.........
It's not a cause and effect thing, I'm sure you know that. But some people might not.

(18,636 posts)It was back in the mid '70s at the Cleveland Air Show, and the F-15 Eagle was still new to the public. The twin engine F-15 was, I believe, the first aircraft with ability to accelerate into the vertical.
They had a hot shot officer hitting the airshow/recruiting circuit back then who would come down the runway low, slow, and dirtied up. Show center he would pull into the vertical and slow to a full stop at about 1000' AGL. I to this day don't know how he and early onboard computers held it there nose straight up for even a second with those P&W engines screeching.
Then into full burn, he lifted skyward at ever increasing acceleration until disappearing into the summer haze. Wow!
I havn't gone to the shows as often since the end of the Masters Of Disaster era, but I never saw anything approaching that again. A lot of people in the crowd seemed to wonder why I was making a big deal of it. They probably assumed all jet planes can fly like rockets.

(1,533 posts)My point being that it doesn't mean that if you go to full thrust you will automatically be going up vertically.

(12,586 posts)The FAA probably published a NOTAM (Notice To Airmen) telling pilots to stay out of the area during the funeral.
As an aside, once when we were picking up an Air Force C-141 from IRAN (Inspect and Replace As Necessary) the pilot asked for clearance to make an unlimited climb from takeoff to our cruise altitude of 28,000 ft. The controller approved it, assuming that a four-engine jet transport would climb at about 4,000 feet per minute. What he didn't know was that the aircraft had been totally stripped inside -- it was basically an empty tube with wings and four very powerful engines. Loaded with just enough fuel to get home we weighed less than half our usual takeoff weight.
From the moment we broke ground until we leveled off at FL280 it took just over two and a half minutes -- almost 12,000 feet per minute. Departure Control was beside himself: "Why didn't you tell me it was going to be an afterburner climb?"
The pilot paused a moment, keyed the mic and calmly said, "Look at our aircraft type..." (Other than the Concorde, transport aircraft don't have AB.)
When the controller finally responded, it was with a subdued instruction to change frequencies to Center.

(10,427 posts)We're on the flight path to BWI. I hadn't heard a plane all afternoon, then I heard something that sounded like fast movers. I'm far enough away from Annapolis that I may just have heard the noise, rather than actually seen them. But, I've seen the Blue Angels before, and they're amazing!

(11,145 posts)Chicago Air and Water Show a few years ago. When the Blue Angles circled around on the north-side a few times they flew right over the ball park. And they were still very low! It was cool.

(2,275 posts)...and no disrespect towards the fly-over ritual (which is pretty impressive)... but are we transitioning to lithium powered fighter jets? I've heard that jet fuel is a huge contributer to the greenhouse effect (which is, technically speaking, our greatest enemy).

Then I remembered the fly over.
