1. Why not just keep pressing him for a yes or no?

The specific question was whether the quote was accurate and still the same.

He wasn't asking for his position, but asking if a comment he made was still true.

And when Kavanaugh wants to explain his answer, Whitehouse could've said: "OK, answer first, then explain."

ETA: But kudos to Whitehouse, I really like him

Although that can be said for literally (yes, literally) everything this administration does.

5. I don't think so. It's important that official records are made of these things.

For history. When someone looks up Kavanaugh in 100 years, they should have a record of these proceedings to see what is NOT a part of the Republican official version of Kavanaugh. Precursors into his future decisions. And a way to look back at what he SAID vs what is true.

It's also important for a couple of the Republicans who aren't sure, to be made sure.

And we, the people, need to know something of the real person, shown by being asked cushy questions from his supporters, and tough questions by his non-supporters. I think it's worthwhile.

9. Oh, he's going to be confirmed. That's not what the hearing is about.

We now know that Kavanaugh lies and is slippery as an eel. We now know how the Republicans have hidden most of his record from the Democrats and the public. We now know that the Republicans have stacked the deck, dumping docs at the last minute & refusing to extend time to start the hearing so the Democrats could review those documents.

We now know pretty much what sort of person he is, and that his decisions will likely be as bad as we think. And future Americans will know.

Yes, those of us who are into politics will remember. I still remember parts of the Borq confirmation hearing, the Clarence Thomas hearing, the Alito hearing. These things matter.

If the Democrats weren't there, the negatives about Kavanaugh (his lies, his slipperiness, his avoidance) would not come out. They did the right thing in going through the hearing, IMO. Otherwise, they would have portrayed the Dems as weak and scared, of not fulfilling their responsibilities, etc., and then they would have asked questions and made speeches making Kavanaugh sound like a knight in shining armor come to save America.

Low key, but pointed questions, and drilled it home. Persistent and not distracted by Kavanaugh's confused looks that Repubs probably think looks adorable.

6. Kavanaugh is a wonky Moloch hungry for streets filled with chaos.

'Blah blah words words blood blood and more blood.'

I'm filled with rage that this creature is being installed. It will be a dark stain on the soul of the United States.

His false pleasantness conceals the ocean of human misery he intends to bathe in.

7. Sheldon Whitehouse was superb, 'answer the question'

to Kavanaugh's winded responses and evasion, esp. on critical issue like ins. companies covering pre-existing conditions. What I've seen of the RI senator, he seems extremely bright and tough, yet fair. And he has a lot of class.
