You've got to be taught to hate and fear
You've got to be taught from year to year
It's got to be drummed in your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught
[Verse 2]
You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade
You've got to be carefully taught
[Verse 3]
You've got to be taught before it's too late
Before you are six or seven or eight
To hate all the people your relatives hate
You've got to be carefully taught

James Michener was a Quaker in his mid-30s when he went to war; Trump was a five-time draft dodger in his 20s.

(38,445 posts)in Grant Park in Chicago. The concert was about famous songs from musicals. The man who sang this song on Broadway, in the original play, "South Pacific" in 1948, sang at that concert. His voice was exactly the same as on the original record which I had at home. I was familiar with this musical since in high school I was in the play, "South Pacific." Listening to William Tabbert that night sing the original song, as he did on broadway, was incredible.

(24,259 posts)As a child I remember watching South Pacific on TV. My parents had the record and I used to listen to this song over and over again and singing along. Even way back then I felt the lyrics deeply and couldn't understand why anyone would hate and fear someone just because they looked, believed or sounded different.
