Good bye, Jeff Flake. It's been quite a year for Arizona.

(4,341 posts)He has voted along party lines, so he should ask himself "Are you loyal to your country or your party", those are his own words.
Talk is cheap, no matter how beautiful and how much truth it carries, but actions speak louder than words.

(37,648 posts)He talks a good game (sometimes). He says things that seem balanced and sensible. But when push comes to shove, he votes along Trump lines.
He did the same thing, leading up to the ACA Republican vote. Then when it came to it, he voted like the other Republicans. He did the same thing regarding Kavanaugh. He made some reasonable noises, then voted for him. Twice. Ensuring that Trump has one more way to get off scot-free from any crimes he may have done.
Flake likes to sound reasonable. He gets air time for it, because it's so unusual for a Republican. But then he votes like the other ones. So in some ways, he's worse, because he's not honest with his positions on things.
He loves the media attention he gets for it, as the country wonders "How's Flake going to vote?" It's all a game to get national attention, because Flake votes along Trumperism lines, along with the rest of them.

(7,142 posts)Flake destroys his Republican colleagues. I get it that Flake did more talking than acting as Senator to what was right. Flake didn't have enough courage to do more. I for one appreciate the small stands he took even though he voted with the herd. I once served on a borough council in a small town. I bucked city hall to do what was right for our town. We had mafiosa-type people who were on the other side. I spent many sleepless nights but knew what I was doing was right. If there was that kind of pressure on me in a small rural town I can imagine the pressure on a Senator to do the right thing. Flake had the courage to speak up, at times, but didn't have the courage to turn into the herd.
Flake's speech is but a small light shining in the darkness, but it is a light. Flake's speech will anger Trump, and that is good. Flake's speech may give some of his colleagues pause when our Constitutional crisis hits us and that is good. Flake didn't have the courage to run against the herd so went off to his desert island, that may be observed as copping out but it did give us someone who isn't afraid to run toward the herd.
His backing of Jim Acosta was also positive, he pretty much had to go there at a correspondence dinner, but I am worried about why it is taking so long for a judge to decide Acosta's fate. I am surprised at the number of people who are not defending Jim Acosta. I am old enough to remember the days of Helen Thomas. JFK said of Helen, she is a nice girl if she'd only get rid of that pad and pencil. I remember the day that Helen asked W. what are the real reasons we went into Iraq, was it for oil, or for Israel? The days of Helen Thomas are long gone and I hope that the days of Jim Acosta are not also gone.

(397 posts)Flake has embarked on this phoney self absolution, knowing that otherwise he is doomed to be associated with this administration.
Other politicians will very soon be jumping ship to do the same - they've looked at the midterm results and see the writing on the wall.
Flakes words - like other republicans - don't mean a thing. His character is revealed through his voting record.
So when he starts popping up as a pundit or Washington insider, remember. He is not a man of principle. He's a crook turned informer.
- hilarious joke about being faced with rape and assault victims in that elevator by the way - what a piece of shit
