(146,325 posts)metro area newspapers last week. I'm not sure what the local TV news did about that. But, reading the newspaper alerted people of this happening. I'm sure it will come as a big surprise to many people, though.

The entire operation was described in the Pioneer Press, with descriptions of the helicopters, etc. That was last week. So, when it happened, I wasn't at all surprised. WCCO television also notified people of the exercise. I read my local newspaper and watch my daily TV local news. That's how I know what's going on. It's a great idea. This was an exercise that has been planned for some time, with the object of familiarizing the people involved with the local conditions, buildings, etc. That training will be used in case of some terrorist attack, as unlikely as that may seem.
So many people are surprised by well-publicized events. I guess they don't bother to keep up with their local news.
BTW, tonight, I learned about the St. Paul police officer who assaulted a man during an arrest. Video and everything. The WCCO 5PM news covered it, with a follow up, including an interview with the police chief at 6 PM. How would I know what is going on without following the news?
Local residents who pay attention were not surprised by this. It got plenty of local coverage in advance.
Are you a resident of the Twin Cities? If so, how is it that you did not know this was taking place?

(30 posts)Cost estimates for operating a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter are $4,600 per hour and up. The total depends on what is counted, such as maintenance costs, crew pay, fuel and other expenses.

To keep the US military as big and expensive as it wants to be!

(26,624 posts)were in Minneapolis, but they were actually in St. Paul? And since the print media let everyone know this was going on, according to mineral's post, residence were prepared for the training exercise?????
MineralMan
(146,325 posts)newspaper or watch the local news on TV knew about this exercise. So, yes, they were prepared. People who didn't were not aware, and are almost never aware. It is good to know what is happening in your area. I did not hear the helicopters, since I live in a neighborhood of St. Paul far from the downtown area. But I did know there was an exercise planned.
Do you live in the Twin Cities?

(146,325 posts)It's close to the downtown area. St. Paul is quite large. I live in the northeast corner of the city, about as far from the downtown area as you can get.

(146,325 posts)and residents who were paying attention to the news knew about it in advance, as I did. You'd be surprised at the preparations here in the Twin Cities. We have a major shipping system running on the Mississippi River that runs through both cities. There's a major airport here, too. It's, you know, like a really big place. Our state capital is in St. Paul. We're a major food manufacturing city and a lot of goods pass through here, too.
Maybe you're not familiar with the place. I have no idea. But, this is not all that much of a secret. At least once a year, helicopters fly around the area for National Guard training, as well. We're used to helicopters here in the big cities. We don't pay that much attention to them, really. The little mosquito control district choppers are way more interesting, since we have so many lakes and ponds in the cities. They do some really fancy maneuvering right in neighborhoods, dropping a bacterial mosquito killing mix on our lakes.
We have, like freeways, too, and several universities, and all that stuff. We're used to stuff flying in the air here. My house is on the landing pattern for the St. Paul Downtown Airport, a busy business jet airport, and planes from MSP also fly over during busy periods.
We're kinda used to modern stuff like that, doncha know?

(146,325 posts)active drone development program. They're developing drones to be used in agricultural applications. I see one flying from time to time. We have, like, all that modern technology here in the flyover, you see. It's a great place to live, with a thriving economy that has weathered the downturn better than most areas. You should come here and see it for yourself.

(146,325 posts)I don't know who they're working for, actually. I do know that aerial photography is important for farmers. It lets them see their crops from a better perspective and spot problems while they can still be corrected. It's expensive, though. So, I imagine that these agricultural drones will be used primarily for that purpose. I'm not sure why Monsanto would be that interested, though. I do know that virtually every Minnesota farm growing soybeans or corn is growing GMO hybrids anyhow, with the exception of a few small ones growing corn to be sold for people who like corn on the cob.
Not all uses of drones are something to be afraid of, you know.
