It was originally built to keep the Mongols out. That guy, Genghis Khan, who conquered China? Mongol.

Most of the Great Wall we see in photos was actually built much later by the Ming dynasty to keep the Manchurians out. The Qing dynasty took over from the Mings. And where did the Qing founders come from? Manchuria.
