(CNN)- Peter Tork (1942-2019) the bassist for The Monkees and a jokester on the band's popular 1960s television series, has died at age 77. Tork's death was announced on his official Facebook page on Thursday, attributed to his friends, family and colleagues. "It is with beyond-heavy and broken hearts that we share the devastating news that our friend, mentor, teacher, and amazing soul, Peter Tork, has passed from this world," the post read. (6,636 posts)As a kid, I knew the Monkees was a TV contrivance, yet I came to love them and the show, which is still funny. They were lucky, too, to have some of Neil Diamond's early songs, like I'm A Believer or Look Out, Here Comes Tomorrow.

(41,146 posts)and many other outstanding musicians of that era. The Monkees show was 1966-68, and a smash hit. Peter fought oral cancer and survived 10 more years, I hope they were fulfilling ones. Pass well, Peter.

(11,652 posts)But was rejected for "bad teeth". Stills recommended Peter Tork for the part. Also, Stills wanted to be more involved with the music than just pretending to play.

Their Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones LTD album (which I recently bought on CD) is one of my favorites of all time!
