(3,433 posts)A quirky funny man with an afro has this capacity to just make you feel better. He is like Fred Rogers in that way. He cuts through the anger and the noise. It's kind of amazing how much he has exploded in our culture over the last couple of years

(3,433 posts)I grew up watching him all the time. I went from Julia Child to Bob Ross on WGBH. He mesmerized me. My mom's first cousin is a painter and she taught me to paint using the wet canvas technique. It was so much fun. She loved that he introduced so many people to art and painting. The fact that he wasnt a serious artist didnt matter. It made him approachable in her opinion. Anyone could try and experiment.
I remember when Bob Ross was made fun of all the time. He was considered a joke. A buffoon. The petty snobbery of it made me so angry. He brought joy to a lot of people long before YouTube and social media.
These past few years where his popularity exploded. I have been so happy about it. With all the hatred and bill that exists in our society, this quirky guy with the afro somehow manages to cut through the noise... 24 years after his death.
That video where he said he would never be in a museum or the smithsonian. That made me tear up. That he will be part of the permanent collection is so great. I wish he was alive to see it.
