(12,712 posts)Since the warnings about deadly pandemics and the need to prepare for them have been sounding for decades, we obviously don't just have COVID-19 to get through. No, this is warning sign, a klaxon with a big red light.
When COVID-19 does start to wane, (which may be a good, long while until it is gone) we can't just let it be churned into the frothy batter of the churning news cycle to be forgotten. That would be suicidal in itself.
There is nothing to stop nature from churning out more strains of Corona and other, maybe even more infectious and deadly diseases that could spread very rapidly and kill far more people than we are seeing from this one. Nothing.
Combine that will the obvious threat of how climate change is making new and recurring infectious diseases more likely, (both from usual vectors and permafrost) we need the kind of attention that was paid on "terrorism", (or really, massively more) on this clear and present danger. We need to mobilize and prepare resources, monitor potential vectors, etc. pull out all stops and develop response that are like a form of societal immunity, a pragmatic vaccine, so to speak.
Otherwise, screw it, most of us are out a' here in that case. It won't be very long until what is left of life will be nothing but rough and barren, difficult and grueling, short and deadly, or just more that contributes to a total Anthropocene extinction event in shorter time than expected.

(3,818 posts)One way to ensure studies and funding is to tell libertarians, teabaggers, neo-liberals to STFU. I blame each and every republican for the last 50 years for this debacle. I don't care how nice and sane they seem, you have to be FUBAR in order to be a republican.
What we are seeing is the slashing and burning of healthcare funding along with privatizing healthcare - read where a lot of hedge funds and private equity funds have been buying up doctor's groups and making the doctors hourly pay.

(4,522 posts)And as horrible as it is.... if we don't fight for a better system that takes care of "us" collectively then we simply will not survive as a species. This is the turning point. It's not going to get better with climate change, etc.
If we don't start seriously moving away from the zero sum game of capitalism and the elite taking everything we are in for some extremely bad times.
