IIHS 50th anniversary demonstration test September 9, 2009
In the 50 years since US insurers organized the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, car crashworthiness has improved. Demonstrating this was a crash test conducted between a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air and a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. In a real-world collision similar to this test, occupants of the new model would fare much better than in the vintage Chevy.
"It was night and day, the difference in occupant protection," says Institute president Adrian Lund. "What this test shows is that automakers don't build cars like they used to. They build them better."
The crash test was conducted at an event to celebrate the contributions of auto insurers to highway safety progress over 50 years. Beginning with the Institute's 1959 founding, insurers have maintained the resolve, articulated in the 1950s, to "conduct, sponsor, and encourage programs designed to aid in the conservation and preservation of life and property from the hazards of highway accidents."

(10,243 posts)the same sort of imbeciles who are now screaming that COVID-19 safety measures are a violation of their constitutional rights, and deprive them of their freedoms, protested seat belts, child car seat use, air bags, safety glass, head restraints and many other features.

(38,445 posts)Since 1980 look at above chart...deaths have gone from 51,000 to about 37,000..
a reduction of 33 %...
Since 1980 the number of cars in U.S. have gone up 50 percent..
100, million to over 200,million...

So, despite the increase of 50 per cent in vehicles, there has been a reduction in deaths of 33per cent over all..& that is what the safety devises ordered by Jimmie Carter to be in place by 1984, have done for us.
Jimmy Carter's order of safety devises has saved tens of thousands of lives..., Now I didn't say thousands, I said tens of thousands of lives over time..just look at the chart and consider the gradual decline over years.. Yes, it was Carter's order in 77 or 78 that mandated safety devises on 84 cars.

(206,005 posts)Often outside of a POTUS's purview. I recommend it highly, he provides all manner of details about the history of the time and it was published in 2015, just before Trump.
That said, I have a Chevy Malibu, except mine is 2016. Good to know since earlier cars were much heavier. My parents kept a 1956 Pontiac for years and it was built like a tank! I experienced a couple of minor accidents from the back seat and the car never sustained any damage - though once I ended up under the dashboard, no seatbelts...

Just bought my wife a 2019 Malibu. Simply an amazing auto. Whoever thinks the American cars are crap OBVIOUSLY doesn't know shit. The quality, safety, performance and style are right up there with the best in the world.
AND......no matter what you say, you will not convince me otherwise. I'm LIKE A ROCK.
