I was in high school in the early 1980's. The Civil Rights era was discussed, and the long history of racial unrest throughout the country was obviously a part of that, but specific atrocities like this never came up.

I'm reading McWhirter's Red Summer right now. The level of violence in 1919, and the nascent civil rights movement it sparked, should be taught to everyone.
