2 min mark, Jean Butler, Michael Flatley: Riverdance at the Eurovision Song Contest 30 April 1994, Dublin. (Pub. 2014).
20 years ago, on April 30th 1994 the interval of the Eurovision Song Contest that was to lead to the creation of one of the most successful stage shows of all time & introduce the wider world to Irish dance & music. As votes were being counted around Europe, in Dublin in the Point Theatre (now the O2), RIVERDANCE burst onto the stage & took the audience by complete surprise. From the haunting vocals of anúna, the graceful elegance of Jean Butler, the explosive arrival of Michael Flatley & culminating in a long line of Irish dancers beating the stage in perfect harmony - a whole new genre of entertainment was born & 20 yrs & 25 mill audience members later - Riverdance still astonishes globally.
Flamenco: Maria Pagès & Michael Flately in the 4th dance of the show. This is the only Firedance where the Flamenco dancer has the male lead as partner in the 2nd part of the dance. All other versions I've seen, this dance is solo. (As far as I know, this 1995 show has never been released on DVD. The clips are captured from my VHS tape).

(5,240 posts)Michael Flatley grew up in the South Chicago suburbs. His dad was a plumber. My father in law knew him back in the day. Glad to see a regular person go far!

(41,177 posts)I never saw Flatley but I caught the show 3 times outdoors, with Jean Butler at least twice. Before seeing it, in Dublin in 1997 I watched authentic Irish kids dancing in a casual pub, and was smitten ever since..

(42,626 posts)but it made me think that there was some special magic/chemistry with Michael Flatley and Jean Butler. The new show didnt have quite the same spark. Maybe its just that Im familiar with it now and the first show was something Id never seen before.
