The main reason he got that one is that it is symmetrical, therefore it could be strung upside down for a lefty and still look the same (though that never stopped Jimi Hendrix). Plus, I've heard he likes the weight and the sound. I always thought his Rickenbacker that he played in the mid-60s sounded best.

And the violin bass isn't his original. I'm sure he has quite a few backups, and the company is still making them.
