Carry on.

(9,753 posts)It was one of the few shows we could receive at the then-USAF base in Alconbury (IIRC, BBC came on at 5pm or so and broadcast for about 6 hours a day).

(153,169 posts)can't remember the name of the base but my dad was stationed in Mildenhall / Lakenheath/ Alconbury / Upper Heyford

(8,352 posts)As a boy, the public access TV station for the college my parents taught at aired Doctor Who in blocks on Saturday mornings. I watched the earlier Doctors in 'syndication' but I saw from Pertwee through Davidson 'live'.
When I went off to college & grad school, I was able to follow Baker & McCoy as well. Big time Doctor Who fan here.

(1,663 posts)I hope the companions get better this time. I didn't think Amy was as good as the other female characters. Rory's constant dying was pretty funny.
We've been waiting for Amy to get replaced. She finally left the series (we hope) in the last episode. My wife liked Rose the best and I think I agree with her, Rose was a very strong character.

(8,352 posts)Yes, Amy Pond was about the worst if not the worst companion the Doctor has ever had. Half the time I wondered is this the Doctor Who show or is it the Amy Pond show?
While I enjoyed Rory to a point, I was frankly quite glad they were killed off last episode. I look forward to seeing if Clara is going to be a better companion.
Rose was my partner & my favorite female after the renewal of this series in 2005 though Donna was really well done if not tragic as well. I grew up on the Doctor, and I loved Sarah Jane, Romana I & II, and Nyssa.

(53,661 posts)The more dire things that happen to the hero, the more the audience learns. I probably won't get to see this incarnation, but it looks pretty good.

(1,663 posts)We know he will get out of it but how he does it is the interesting part. Why won't you see it?

(53,661 posts)Which I can get online. It's part of the bundle and they won't cut that off, but want another $40 for full cable. Also, I hate commericals and a lot of what's on seems so rightwing it makes me
They used to carry The Doctor on PBS but I don't get it anymore, either. It's too bad, but I'm out of sync with some current memes now.

(1,663 posts)I cut back on my cable package and my son refused to get cable in his new place.
I record shows for family members who don't have certain channels and they do the same for me. Shhh, don't tell anyone

(674 posts)and entertainment streamed from Netflix or DVD's from the library.
We're lucky, our library system has an enormous collection of British TV and foreign films.
By subscribing to Netflix our total TV cost has gone down to $10. We have the advantage though of getting all the networks off the air, even though we're pretty rural. No PBS would probably drive me back to cable.

(126 posts)I saw a really good comparison of the three doctors of the modern series recently in a YouTube comment: Chris Ecclestone is more the father figure doctor, Matt Smith is more the loving boyfriend type (especially with Rose) whilst Matt Smith is like the immature friend you have over for a few beers.

(674 posts)in fact he's become my favorite Dr.
To me he's the most alien of them all. I can easily imagine him having two hearts.
I'm hoping he has an epic run like Tom Baker's.
TM99
(8,352 posts)Having grown up with the Doctor, I still find Matt Smith's portrayal to be rather weak. Really, I think it is that he is just too young. He does not convince me that he is a 900 year old alien who has witnessed and assisted in the genocides of two of the universe's greatest races.
And that episode last season about the cubes really made it hard for my girlfriend and I to take him seriously. He acted like a bored ADD teenager while waiting for the cubes to 'do something'.
We will give him another chance. Perhaps a change in companions will deepen and mature this actor and his Doctor. Perhaps not. We shall see.

(11,087 posts)I really liked Lady Christina de Souza in "Planet of the Dead." I wish he could reconnect with Sally Sparrow from "Blink," the best episode ever (the introduction of the Weeping Angels with an excellent explanation of "wibbly wobbly timey-wimey stuff" .
