American Madness - Character

Last edited Sat Nov 24, 2012, 05:25 PM - Edit history (1)

This was directed by Frank Capra 15 years before It's A Wonderful Life, but there are a lot of the same themes.

I first saw this movie on TCM in the fall of 2008 as the financial system was going to hell.

In this scene, banker John Dickson, played by Walter Huston is trying to convince the board of directors to keep from selling the bank to a larger faceless bank. He argues for keeping money flowing so that the economy can survive and lending based on character.

The similarities with 2he 2008 credit fiasco are striking

Potter was played by Lionel Barrymore.

Another Capra movie which may interest you is You Can't Take It With You which Capra made in 1938. It also starred Jimmy Stewart and Lionel Barrymore with an ebullient Jean Arthur and an outstanding supporting cast of character actors.

Highly recommended. A comedy with similar message.

Here's IMDB on it: http://m.imdb.com/title/tt0030993/

I just wanted an excuse to post about YCTIWY.

Great flick! Get your harmonica and let's do rip roaring chorus of Polly Wolly Doodle! Makes your heart just melt.

Have you noticed that previous to the 2008 collapse of Wall Street, the major television net works would run "You Can't Take It With You" during the Christmas Season till you thought you would scream. But how many times have you seen it on the big networks since the banksters took their tumble with our money? I haven't seen it listed on the major networks Christmas programing for the last 3 years.Let's all push to bring back Mr Potter this Christmas so our children can see how the Mr Potters and the banksters really do business.

Or any number of sites who will sell you the DVD, or the book of the play.

Plus,I believe TCM played it in recent months.

I do not know the purpose of your post, apparently your first on DU.

What are you trying to say, my friend?
