Published on Nov 27, 2012 by NTDTV

Late rocker Jimi Hendrix would have turned 70 years old on November 27.

Full story:

Legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix would have turned 70 years old on November 27.

The American musician, who shot to fame in the late 1960s, died at the age of 27 in September of 1970.

He is widely considered to be one of the greatest electric guitar players in the history of pop music, and one of the most important musicians of the 20th century.

Hendrix and his band the "Jimi Hendrix Experience," rocketed to fame in the U.S. after his 1967 performance at the Monterey Pop Festival.

He headlined the Woodstock Festival in 1969, and the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970, before dying from drugs at the age of 27.

He was influenced musically by American rock and roll and electric blues.

Rolling Stone magazine ranked three of his albums among the top 100 Greatest Albums of All Time.

my first acoustic guitar in 1964 at the age of ten, trying to copy Beatles guitar strums, it wasn't until Hendrix that I was seriously into electric guitar. I played with a couple of bands were I played rhythm guitar and was the lead singer. We played at several night clubs, but to put it mildly, I sucked horribly at guitar.

I haven't played in a band since 1977 but I still play electric guitar solo at my house in my personal cave with some Hendrix guitar books and a couple of How To videos, How To Play Like Jimi Hendrix and How To Play Like Stevie Ray Vaughn. I still suck big time.

You're comparing yourself to HENDRIX. With the exception of Clapton, Stevie Ray, and Knopfler, everyone sucks next to him!
Well, wait...there's BB King, Keith Richards...OK, there's a few REALLY good guitarists out there, but he was the definition. "Hendrix" should be a verb.

a right-handed Gibson SG in the video that he turned around to play left-handed, just like he did with his right-handed Fender Strat. Interesting, I've seen the video but never noticed until now that Jimi is playing with an SG.

A couple of years ago I was looking in Craigs List in the musical instruments section. I noticed some guy was selling a Fender Strat, he didn't mention in his post whether it was a Deluxe, Standard or any information besides the color. Also included was a Peavy Amp, again no information just it was black. He also wrote that they were both in great working condition. He was asking $150 for both because they were old. WTF? I immediately called him, but alas, it was already sold. Selling 'em cheap because they were old. He needs to learn.

attempts to learn to play his music. I don't want to offend you -- but I take pride in the thought that my attempts rank as the Most Pathetic Ever.

Likewise, it was The Beatles who inspired my absolute love of music. I find it impossible to trust any person who does not love their music. And that goes for the Plastic Ono Band, too.

The highlight of my musical experiences was performing with friend David Peel and The Lower Eastside Gang at a Woodstock anniversary concert.

In college, I had some talented friends. When I had consumed massive quantities of alcohol and other things, I could do a pretty fair cover of Jim Morrison-while-incapacitated. To bring this disjointed post full-circle, I have a strange bootleg of Jimi, Jim, and Johnny Winter playing live at a club in NYC. Morrison is raging drunk and obscene .... up until one hears a "thud," which resulted from his passing out on stage.

Crazy days.

His outrageous truth and beauty still brings tears

Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey
Look at the sky turn a hell fire red
Somebody's house is burnin' down down, down down
Down, down, down.
Well I asked my friend where is that black smoke comin' from ?
He just coughed and changed the subject and
said oh wa I think it might snow some
So I left him sippin' his tea an' I jumped in my chariot
And rode off to see just why and who could it be this time.
Sisters and brothers daddys mothers standin' 'round cryin'
When I reached the scene the flames were makin' a ghostly whine
So I stood on my horse's back an' I screamed without a crack
I say oh baby why'd you burn your brother's house down ?
Hey ! Hey ! Hey ! Hey !
Look out the sky turn a hell fire red Lord
Somebody's house is burnin' down down, down down
Look out the sky turn a hell fire red Lord
Somebody's house is burnin' down down, down down down.
Well someone stepped from the crowd he was nineteen miles high
He shouts retired and disgusted so we paint red through the sky
I said the truth is straight ahead so don't burn yourself instead
Try to learn instead of burn, hear what I say, yeah, yeah.
So I fin'ly rode away but I'll never forget that day
'Cause when I reached the valley I looked way down cross the way
A giant boat from space landed with eerie grace
And came and taken all the dead away.
Hey ! Hey ! Hey ! Hey !
What'd I say.
Look at the sky turn a hell fire red Lord
Somebody's house is burning down down, down down
Look at the sky turn a hell fire red Lord
Somebody's house is burning down down, down down
Look at the sky, look at the sky.
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Oh baby

Jimi wrote “House Burning Down” shortly after the King assassination, and the riots that resulted from it. It was a powerful statement then, and holds up just as strongly today.

“Peace in Mississippi” was the working title for an instrumental, which Jimi planned to release on another double-album of new songs ….he had gone on a European tour to raise the money needed to complete the project when he died. That title would be placed on a couple versions of related songs after his death.

I spent a lot of time listening to Jimi yesterday -- I have one of the largest collections of his music, including all the “released in the USA” albums/C.D.s, numerous European albums (including the 5-record “Motown” set from Germany), and tons of bootleg stuff.

The DVD “Blue Wild Angels” has been released, and I strongly recommend it to all Hendrix fans. It’s the last filmed concert Jimi did, which is reason enough to purchase it. And it is also one fine example of how this gentle soul could translate the things going on inside his mind to an audience. Beautiful!

I was at a Moody Bues concert in Detroit and they dedicated the concert to Sir Jimmy, giving pause and mentioning him again before the last song, "Night in White Satin". We were stunned and so saddened to lose such a person...
