his comment regarding "it has not shown to be unsafe". Really Nick? It hasn't shown to be "safe" either and shouldn't that really be your first comment?? It really has had next to no testing, especially long term testing on what it does to a human body. Sure we can take a corn seed and inject it with something and watch what it does but a human being is way to complex for any simple input/output testing. And since we have an ex-Monsanto person running a budget-cut FDA overseeing a Monsanto self-test then there are no real consequences so I guess we all just take it up the...you know what.

know what we're putting into our mouths and decide for ourselves what we eat.

(I don't think it's safe at all, by the way!)

to label those 'risky' capitalist products because, well, IF it turns out as being bad for human health, wouldn't THAT impact THEIR bottom lines in the future???

My point is, I don't understand why the wrongdoings of one capitalist industry would get a 'get-away-with-it-scot-free' if what they do would turn out being at the detriment of another capitalist industry. Shouldn't they at least be 'consistent' from one another??

Just try to find a seed catalog that they don't dominate or outright own, including Burpee,Park Seed,Territorial Seeds even Johnny's Selected Seeds. I believe Fedco is still stridently Monsanto free.By the way, nice look, Rachel.

And as Rachel said "Convince me that it is safe." I don't have a problem eating genetically engineered food. In fact, I favor it and would suggest it is an essential component of our modern technology as we struggle to feed the 7 billion human mouths on the planet.

BUT, It should be labeled AND I don't believe you can, as Monsanto has done, patent the seeds. To me that is absurd.

every generation of farmed food, since time immemorial, is genetically modified from the previous generation. Farmers since 10,000 BC have been modifying their crops by culling the weak ones and replanting the heartier ones. So in a sense, "genetically modified" is a meaningless term.

However, when some injects fish genes into tomatoes or creates genetic markers that do nothing by demonstrate patented genetic modifications for legal harassment of farmers, then that becomes a problem. The courts and the legislators have to create a new law that distinguishes genetic modification the "old-fashioned way" versus genetic modification that would never been able to be done without the specific knowledge of "genetics", "genome", and molecular biology.

In other words, if you can do genetic modification without anything more than a agriculture degree or less, no big deal. If you need a molecular biology degree to do genetic modification, that should be legislated.

.... on FreeSpeech TV, with cattle and hog farmers (not the factory growing kind) that told of what happens when they changed their livestock to GMO feed. One cattle farmerx said he lost 90% of his herd. Other cattle owners, after loosing 2-3 cows, changed them off the GMO feed, back to their regular non-GMO feed and they stopped keeling over and dying. A hog farmer changed his hogs over to GMO food, and he said it changed their personalities from happy squealing/playful animals to lethargic/sick. After 3 days, he put them back on their regular non-GMO feed and the hogs perked back up and were their happy healthy selves again. (He didn't let it go until he found them dead.) And these weren't "experiments".

If it does this to livestock, doesn't it stand to reason that humans who consume GMO foods might have some kind of negative reaction to it too?

Does anyone remember that case back around about 8-10 years ago at Taco Bell restaurants? The corn that got into taco bell food was from corn that was meant for livestok feed, and it made people sick? They had to pull all of that corn product out before they could reopen the restaurants. My son was effected by it. Never had a sick day in his life, BUT, he loved tacos from taco bell. And all of a sudden he was having trouble breathing. Took him to ER and they gave him a couple hand inhalers and sent him home. It was the same week that all of this happened at Taco Bell. He didn't go back to Taco Bell anymore.

This backs up what you report on farmers.

One of the main reasons the agribusiness model wants GMO is to adapt the plants to a changing environment. But, to the contrary, the most sustainable methods of farming (which is deja vu from the Dust Bowl era) is to use contour and natural crop rotation.

In the end, GMO's have induced food allergies beyond belief, a weakening of the plant's ability to produce anything that isn't harmful to livestock and humans.

By the time we get the REAL numbers published HERE (as opposed to the EU, China and elsewhere) on cancer, birth defects, infertility, allergies and autism, we're going to be on the food cliff, America.

Our food safety system is broke and has been for decades. I wonder if the CDC has a file on diseases/illnesses/deaths directly related to human ingestion of GMO foods? Or of livestock which have been fed the GMO feed and then ingested by humans? So many of the agencies and regulations in out gov't that were created to keep us safe, are silenced or all but done away with. Are we sitting ducks? It's beginning to look that way. "Food cliff"...describes the situation to a tee.

One thing that aggravates me is that we have so much knowledge, but don't use it. The environment, food safety & supply, health care, etc., etc., etc. Reagan used to call America "...the shining city on a hill...". It's not. It just seems like every major decision we make is the wrong one. For us and for the world. Politics+Money = Chaos.
