I was under the impression that the minimum requirement for teaching in an Alabama school was the ability to walk upright. Then I learned that this knuckle walker was also the football coach and remembered that Alabama football coaches are exempt from the upright requirement.

"the ability to walk upright" is in fact NOT a job requirement, not for teachers anyway, not since Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act were passed.

In fact, the nation's first disability-based anti-job discrimination federal lawsuit was brought (in the early 1970s, I think) by a woman who was told she couldn't work as a public school teacher--despite having all the credentials and great references--entirely because she couldn't walk upright and thus had to use a wheelchair.

I know what you mean -- "walk upright" as opposed to "knuckle dragger" -- and I'm sure that discriminating against people with disabilities was the furthest thing from your mind -- but your comment made me wince, so I felt compelled to post.

That said, obviously the only thing this jerk is qualified to teach, and this only by example, is how to get fired for being a bigoted asshole.

Earlier this week I had a conversation with my son. He is away at college. Apparently, the use of racial and ethnic slurs is making a resurgence, disguised as humor. I told him to avoid such speech, as it contributes nothing useful to conversation and can hurt people. I will follow my own advise. Thanks.

ROGERSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — School officials in Lauderdale County say they'll likely hold a special session before Feb. 14 to determine whether disciplinary action is needed for a high school football coach who made disparaging comments about homosexuals and Michelle Obama during class.

Lauderdale County High School football coach Bob Grisham told the Times Daily of Florence (http://bit.ly/U9D7dZ) he misspoke during a debate-style discussion that an unidentified student recorded on Jan. 28. The newspaper reports Grisham has not been back in class this week.

Advocates in the LGBT community have called for Grisham's firing or resignation.
