1. Very important point: Symptoms can mimic other problems.

The classic image of a man clutching his chest in pain and collapsing really ought to be put to rest. There are a great many symptoms that can indicate a heart attack, including back, jaw, or wrist pain; nausea; feeling overheated; and weakness.

When in doubt, get to the hospital, immediately, ideally by ambulance but if necessary with another driver.

Doctor to doctor on a talk radio show years ago. One doc tells the other he gave a physical to a guy and he was ok, but his patient seemed he had something More he was to say. Doc got him to talk and he said - get this - the tip of his nose would tingle during sex when he climaxed! Gave me a chuckle...at first.

Doc sent him to the hospital right away. That was a sign of a mini-heart attack! Added that the more subltle things were heart attack signs in women, while men usually get "the big one."

People fall ill, get self conscious, retreat to private places, then they collapse, often against the door.

Door opens inward...

The symptoms shown here are SOMEWHAT reliable but one of the things about women is they may not experience the classic symptoms men get.

A man's heart has more rigid structures so a woman having a heart attack delivers different symptoms.

For some it's just feeling light headed. Some faint from a drop in their BP. Unfortunately, this is often written off as "just being a woman".

As if blacking out is just part of the package of being "the weaker sex".

She said she never would have guessed heart attack had the nurse not been there.

Ed to add: Oh you mean before I have a heart attack. No, I don't get that worked up over nonsensical posts, but thanks for your concern. Still would like to know what you were getting at.

just under my sternum. Took some aspirin and went back to bed; then remembered I should have taken some niacin too, but didn't get back.

When I got back up two hours later, I still felt miserable. Seeing this video didn't help at all. But remembering that I've had the sensation before and that it was caused by allergies to tree pollen, I took a long hot shower, which helped somewhat..

Sigh. This is tree pollen season and it will hang around, off and on, until May sometime. One must pay a price for living in paradise.

15. If you do believe you are having a heart attack, please don't go back to bed.

If you really think you have the symptoms, just go to the emergency room and deal with your insurer later. Embarrassment isn't worth risking your life over.

I did meet one woman who had had a heart attack and afterwards some confusion about what chest pain was indicative of cardiac problems and what was common indigestion. Your best bet is to tell a nurse or doctor exactly what you're feeling and what its onset was. A heart attack can have varying symptoms, some of which may be missed even by staff at the emergency room.

triple bypass -- and I don't EVER want to go through that!

There was no reason for me to have a heart attack, (low BP, low cholesteral, low pulse rate, and no family history until the eighties of any heart problems) so I didn't really believe that it was one... And thankfully it wasn't. I wasn't thinking to clearly that early in the AM.

It can happen in people with normal blood pressure. It can happen at age 39 or younger. It can happen to people who never smoked, It can happen to people who exercise regularly.
