The Republicans are to blame entirely. The sequester was put in as a poison pill that would force the parties to agree on a balanced package of tax increases and pending cuts. Unless they could reach an agreement, the bill would trigger automatic sequester cuts that would be reprehensible to both sides. They refused to accept a penny of tax increases, as usual, allowing the sequester trigger to be put into effect.

Do not blame Obama for this. You are falling for the Republican talking points if you buy the argument in the OP.
