This is like the 3rd time that people have issues with cc while I watch it everyday without problems. wonder what that is about...

To be fair, it's not a crime against humanity. Maybe against spelling.

I'd rather watch Stewart and Colbert with subtitles than not being able to watch them at all.

1. these software-based subs nowadays are so crappy that sometimes I can't even watch - my brain just gives up, focusing on the errors in transcription makes me miss what I'm actually watching.

2. Watching subtitled movies where you understand both audio and subs is equally nerveracking for me, I get lost listening/reading and musing about the artitistic freedom in translating ...

3. OTOH, sibtitles are what saved me when I first came to Europe and I had to realize that my german wasn't all that I thought of it, going to the movies was very soothing as it was symbolic for the fact that actually The US wasn't that far away after all.

That's 2:1 to second your complaint. I hope fortune will continue to bless my use of cc, without subs and other issues.

Sometimes, they are usually pretty good but sometimes they get it wrong. About six months ago, there was an item about an American soldier. The English voiceover described him as "a career soldier" but the Dutch subtitles listed him as "a Korea soldier".

But my favourite subtitle blunder was when I was watching the Greek movie "Z" in the late sixties. One of the actors spoke for about thirty seconds and the entire thirty seconds was translated as the word "No"!!!!

And I agree. I watch the subtitles to see how it's been stuffed up. I get the impression that they are computer generated. I don't think a human would confuse "eight" and "ate". and some of the other mistakes just aren't English.

Now I'm jealous that I'm not multi-lingual!
