Maher:GOP Didn’t Suddenly Go ‘Off The Rails,’ Always Been Weird Mix Of 'Jesus Freaks' & 'Plutocrats'

VIDEO here: http://www.mediaite.com/tv/bill-maher-to-panel-gop-didnt-suddenly-go-off-the-rails-always-been-weird-mix-of-jesus-freaks-and-plutocrats/

Bill Maher tonight looked at the recent attempts to moderate the GOP and draw the party away from strongly conservative candidates like Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock. However, Maher couldn’t help but point out that in spite of conventional wisdom, that the Republican party only just recently went “off the rails,” he said the party has always been an “uneasy marriage” between “Jesus freaks” and “plutocrats.” -snip-

Just yesterday (not literally) it seemed like people were afraid or ashamed to be called a bigot or a racist. Now, it seems like it's suddenly ok to a group of people to be called that and some seem proud of it. Then there are others like Rush who is blatantly racist and sexist yet, he proclaims he isn't even though it's as plain as the cyst on his ass.

Hoover because Smith was Catholic. (1928) The first crack in the solid south. Among those who took this stance was Bob Jones Sr., the founder of the notorious university.

At the time it was considered a high salary, even for a professional position. Minimum was something like $3.65 at the time. I had the skills to warrant the higher rate. I was 19, single, no kids, and still had trouble getting by with a $400/mo rent for a one-bedroom apartment I shared with a girlfriend who ALSO was working, but at a lot less - retail rather than tech geek. My wife works with people who make 7-8$/hr - TODAY. That's just wrong.

Gas was about 35 cents/gal when I started driving. If you can find it for ten times that amount now you're lucky. The minimum wage has not kept up with the cost of living. Personally, I'd advocate a tax code change that would exempt all income at (or below in the case of wait-staff) the minimum wage as if it didn't exist and a minimum wage of at least $15/hr minimum. Even that's low in my opinion. It might get you by if you're single and living alone, but $30K isn't enough to run a family household on.

The corporations are funneling all of the money to the executives at the expense of the people who make the income happen. The $130K or so cap on FICA should also disappear. I pay the full amount on all of my income, why can't everybody? It's regressive at best and oppressive in reality. It should be a flat rate for everyone and self-employed people shouldn't have to pay double. Interest and dividend income should just fall into the "income" category and FICA should apply to that as well. Grump, grump, grump.

The current tax and income situation is just wrong on too many levels to enumerate. Yes, I'm pissed off. More income means more spending which means more sales. Businesses should think this is a good thing rather than opposing it. Economics REALLY isn't that complicated. The more money consumers (not uber-rich snots) have the best it is for the economy.

People tend to spend what they make and unfortunately more in many cases. The uber-rich just hoard the money and buy their luxury cars from foreign companies. That isn't helping our economy or creating jobs - it just keeps them rich.

This country has been in a shithole since Reagan came into office and it has only improved under Clinton and Obama. The GOP is determined to destroy everything and there's no rationale behind that. It seems that all they are doing is funneling tax money into the pockets of their corporate sponsors. Wait - maybe that's the reason they want to destroy the company!
