Shrimp Christmas Tree Appetizer With Eggnog

Prepare Christmas Tree base: Place Styrofoam cone in center of Styrofoam square and trace with pencil; cut out circle and lodge cone firmly in square.

Cover base and cone with curly endive leaves, overlapping leaves to resemble evergreen leaves, and fastening leaves to Styrofoam with toothpicks. (Work from bottom to top.)

Decorate tree with shrimp, attaching to the Styrofoam with toothpicks and arranging them in spiral manner; if desired, decorate tree with additional nibblers (olives, pimiento stars, cherry tomatoes, radish roses) and top tree with red ribbon. Serve with Cocktail Sauce.

Cocktail Sauce: Mix 1/2 cup prepared horseradish with 2 cups chili sauce; for creamy cocktail sauce, fold in 1/2 cup mayonnaise.

There were only so many colors they could reproduce back then, making everything appear weird and otherwordly.

But there is still a large component of "WTF were they thinking". I blame lead in the environment and also smoking, which killed everyone's tastebuds.

Many years ago, when I was a teenager, my mom served these to our family as a "salad." That version was a lettuce leaf topped with a slice of canned pineapple, into which was placed a banana, standing on end. At the tip of the banana was a dab of mayonnaise and a half maraschino cherry. When these appeared on the dining room table my dad, my brother and I burst into hysterical laughter because the "salads" were so... salacious. Mom told us we were disgusting people with dirty mind, but she laughed too when she figured out why we were ROFL.

on it's butt to simulate a fluffy tail. Alas, if those slivered almonds were longer, the ears would be more realistic.

LOL. You just time ripped me back to when I was ten! I used to make this for my family. I forgot until I saw this. It's still cute.
