(12,272 posts)Rainy and still in Seattle today, but will check the site again on a windy day and when a US city has a severe weather warning. Cool project.

(115,869 posts)It looks like all the wind in the central US is being sucked up at Grand Forks, ND. And, since the barometric pressure at GFK is currently 29.73, that's pretty serious low pressure. It's really interesting to line up this map with a weather radar map and see how the wind speed and direction correspond with storm systems.

and your link is perfect for understanding what the heck is causing it.
Thank you.

(60,010 posts)Watching that wind chart, looks like half the country's air is blasting right down at us.

(12,723 posts)We call those days breezy in Oklahoma. They warn us when it gets to 70mph which it does every few years or so.

(60,010 posts)unless there are thunderstorms and hurricanes, the air is pretty still.
Which what makes the humidity so bad, it is heavy and muggy.
Even tho the last big hurricane to hit SW Ala was Ivan in 2004, many trees are still weak rooted and tilted,
they come crashing down in mild winds.
It is very strange to look around and realize how few tall older trees around here are straight.

(12,723 posts)those are serious enough winds for small crafts, cars, trees and such.
But it is true that more often than not the wind speeds here tend to be more than 25 mph. At least it used to be true. Climate change strikes again and now we have calm days. It is so weird.
