I could only figure out a way to share the small versions.

And I noticed, as well, that the larger images couldn't be linked to - and those were too large anyway. What I do with these things is do a Google Search for the image - then choose one that's both the appropriate size and that has a link that works. Sometimes I can't find one, but there were several choices of these, just not all the same size.

Seems obvious but I never thought of that. Figured it would just lead to the original source photos.

But a lot of times the pic from the news site doesn't work - or it's just way too big. I think your photos worked just fine. Some DUers have issues with really large photos - the reason SCE posts a warning on LOL Cats. But I saw a few more of the animal photos I liked - besides your good choices - so that's what I tried. Hope I helped if you run into the same issue with including photos that I often do. I used to use Photobucket (where I could edit for size), learned how to do that right here on DU, but that's not an option anymore. *sigh*
