The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI'm going to be alone for Thanksgiving for the first time in years.
I usually go out of town to visit family or go to a friend's house for Thanksgiving. Next year I will deal with traveling and my republican relatives. This year, this is exactly how I want to spend Thanksgiving. I'm looking forward to having a long weekend to myself. I'm not a big fan of turkey so I'm going to make a bunch of sides, curl up on the couch, watch movies and play video games with the cats. I have two cats of my own and I'm cat sitting one more for a friend.
Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

(57,484 posts)"Born Yesterday" was making the rounds on the cheapskate TV channels a few years back. I've never seen the whole thing.
There's one scene in "Born Yesterday" where William Holden takes Judy Holliday to see the Constitution or Declaration of Independence -- in the Great Hall of the Library of Congress. At the time, the LOC was entirely in the Jefferson Building. Also at the time, that's where those documents were kept. They were moved to the National Archives in 1953 I think. The move was a big deal. Armed guards, the whole thing. Not like "National Treasure."

(19,565 posts)I'm spending mine with my closest and dearest family, no extended family this year! It's also going to be a lovely event. Exactly like I want to be spending my holiday this year, too.
I hope more people are able to be like us and just say no to the unwanted and unpleasant family who spoil every gathering.
Hug your kitty for me, please? I lost both of mine this year. My Tink the end of February and my Boo the second of October. Give your kitty some extra love for me and my holiday will be complete.

(37,648 posts)Any secret to keeping them living that long? I do everything I know to do (both dogs & cats), but none of mine have lived the expected lifespan. They all have fallen short of it. Regular exams, vaccines, healthy food, lots of walks for the dogs, all were indoor pets, love & attention, rush to vet if something seems wrong.
Maybe my vets haven't been too good?

Boo was 6 weeks old when I took him and his brother in as fosters, so I can imagine how close you are to your little babies who were even younger. They're so dependent on you at that age and they bond so deeply to you. Enjoy the years, and years of love and joy you have ahead of you!
I'm so glad I chimed in on your post. You made me smile and gave me kitty love by proxy. Thank you!!

(34,136 posts)Or, do like my sister does with Christmas now that our family does not have holidays. She has a cookout at her place and a bunch of her friends bring stuff to contribute. Most of them are childless or their children are away living their own lives. It's a fun time, though I have only been once.
Our friends who are childless are getting to that point - their parents are gone and they try to get together for the holidays. Because my in laws always have a big do planned, my husband and I are pretty much obligated to go to their events, even when I would rather stay home for a quiet day.
Happy Thanksgiving to you!

(24,006 posts)...prepared to feel sad for you, but it sounds like you have things set up just the way you want them, so bravo to you.
At our house, it is always just my husband, our 2 sons, and me. We live in the far northwest suburbs of the greater Chicago area. We are not native to the area, unlike all our neighbors. We have no relatives anywhere near enough (New York, Colorado and Wyoming), and all our neighbors are busy with their own relatives - can't invite anyone to join us because they all have plans with their extended families.
Our sons are now 25 and 27. We discovered fairly early on that it takes to young men with healthy appetites no longer to consume a Thanksgiving diner that took 6+ hours to prepare than it does for them to wolf down a frozen pizza that took 15 minutes in the oven. I always dawdle over my dinner so that we stay at the table at least 30 minutes. Now that they both are living on their own, there is at least more to talk about than when they were still in high school and we saw each other every day.
Enjoy your solitude and your kitties. We have 4.

(19,862 posts)holidays. We should be living Thanksgiving and the current/upcoming holy holidays with the way we live each and everyday. I really disdain ppl who show grace and thanks only on the days when they fall on the calendar versus making those values a part of their day to day lives.

I recently separated from my husband of 32 years--my choice--and moved 3 hours away to the beach for the off season until the end of March. I didn't want to run in to him around town the way a friend reported to me she did the other day. So I don't know anyone around here.
I have my dog with me. We've already established a routine that involves a lot of reading (got a library card this week)and I am retired. I will be very happy not to have to cook. Will miss seeing my grown sons and their partners, though. Hoping they will come visit me sometime in the next few months.
I have always been comfortable being alone. No other family in the state or nearby. It will be just another day for me.

Read Dickens', "A Christmas Carol," went for a walk in the snow. Fortunately, had plenty of food in the house so I managed to put together enough of a feast that I was happily fed, and just thought of favorite memories of Christmases past.

(6,927 posts)Yes, I would prefer a larger crowd, but that would require travel which I hate at the holidays. There will be no political discord, we are all in agreement. So my husband, sister and I will have a quiet day. Quiet and no political arguments are things for which to be thankful.
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you, hope there are minimal political skirmishes and if there are please assure them that you belong to a group who generally agree with you.

(15,540 posts)especially as they are now. I'm fine by myself but my neighbors always act like they pity me. I had many, many years of hosting big Thanksgiving dinners and it got tiring after years of it. I welcomed any excuse not to do all that work any longer. I know some women probably love it, but not me. Seems like an awful lot of money and time spent on one meal that gets eaten in less than 20 minutes.
I actually like Christmas even less what with all the materialism and very little true meaning left to the holiday. But I try to enjoy the parts of it I do like. I'm not a total Scrooge.
Now that I'm older I don't do anything or go anywhere I don't really want to. I'm so done with all the societal notions of what one is supposed to be doing on a holiday.

There's always a good marathon, and some really good movies on T-Giving. That's enough for me.
