They are opening on Thanksgiving at 2 pm and stay open overnight through 10 pm Friday. Inexcusable!

(20,202 posts)They have a pretty good selection of plus size clothes, but no more. I worked in retail for 13 years. People only have a certain number of dollars to spend. They don't spend more just because a store stays open longer.

(50,559 posts)My warehouse has been full of Black Friday All Month Long circulars since the 20th of last month.

(23,322 posts)I don't even have Thanksgiving with my sister's family any more because they plan to be done and cleaned up from dinner so they can be shopping by 5pm. Miserable.

(23,322 posts)shop regular retail this Thurs-Sun unless it is a locally owned business or craft fair. Some of our best local artisans have shows this weekend and I'll be supporting them. Everybody else can pound sand.

(4,492 posts)There's a lot of artisans (shameless plug-- including myself) that have stores on there and in general it is a very supportive community.

(10,053 posts)I also like to shop at the local museum gift shops, especially since the museums don't get arts funding like they used to.

(1,896 posts)We had a pretty busy November, but from Black Friday until basically the first week in January we were there every day, all day, except December 25 and January 1. I don't miss it.

(12,132 posts)and i have never regretted it. There were times I had to work 2 and 3 jobs to make ends meet but my day job was not retail (except for an emergency 9 month stint in a liquor store while I looked for other work). My night jobs were mostly pizza delivery and could pick my own hours at those.

(6,262 posts)This is the sorry recognition that yet another once-bedrock retailer for the middle class is on the chopping block.

(26,403 posts)They are trying every trick in the book to get one dollar more. They blew the transition to the Internet and with interconnected retail in general and are lost. They are circling the drain, albeit a little farther up than Sears.

(20,202 posts)Their sales haven't been all that bad, but the interest payments on their debts is the killer and frankly, I don't think they ever really recovered from their time with Ron Johnson as CEO, from 2011 to 2013. He ran Apple's retail stores, but that is a very different business model than a general department store. His tenure was catastrophic. I think they lost a lot of their core shoppers, who never came back.
JCP and Sears are not long for this world. Many people will not miss them but I have to say that I will.
They are one of the few places that sell practical clothing that fits business casual workplace attire at somewhat reasonable prices. I know this makes me hopelessly old and lacking in style but I don't want the latest fashion. I want classics that can be boring but still useful over time.

(20,202 posts)They have Dockers-like pants and button down shirts.

(5,528 posts)But as I recall, I think I only see them at Kmart. Which falls into the same problem of going out of business.
I will keep an eye out.
Thanks

(4,492 posts)Yes they have some crazy stuff too but they have the basics as well.

(8,003 posts)I've always had good luck with them and good service as well.

(25,372 posts)I did find a stick vac, which I like. However, when I checked out the garden tools/supplies, it was pretty bleak.
Our lawn mower is a Craftsman. It operates on two large batteries. It has held up better than our last two Black and Deckers.

(205,467 posts)They have terrific sales - forget Wal-Mart - and I like their jeans and sweaters. And I'm actually wearing warm flannels I got there right this moment...

(5,810 posts)And this was years ago before it turned into the stampede it is today. You'd Have to anesthetize me and carry me in on a stretcher to get me anywhere close to a retail outlet in the next few days. I realize there are people who love the whole experience but I am not one of them. I will let them have their fun while I pour another cup of coffee and relax in my recliner. I MIGHT eat another piece of pumpkin pie.

(20,202 posts)At least that way their employees can have Thanksgiving lunch with their friends and family. 2pm is just too early. Frankly, I can't imagine anyone wanting to shop that early either.
crazycatlady
(4,492 posts)In most cases (New Year's Day, 4th of July, etc) it was time and a half. On some days (when I worked at a 24 hour drugstore) it was double time for Christmas eve evening (after 5) and Christmas Day. I volunteered for those shifts.

(16,172 posts)and ran it into the ground I haven't shopped there.
F...k them....... Although I like the people that work there, even if I don't know them, the honchos are major sucks.

(720 posts)But opening on Thanksgiving has become the trend, and JCP isn't Apple, or even Target, and can't afford to close when its competitors are open.

(20,202 posts)Most of the other stores aren't open before 5. TJ Maxx and Marshall's aren't open at all.

(21,161 posts)They were special priced 12.99 and then I got rewards discounts and 25% off for using my credit. Bill came to $11.73. I was shocked it was so low. That said I never will set good in a department store thanksgiving day or the day after. I thinks it bs to shop on a national holiday. I hope the workers are at least getting time and a half pay.

(20,202 posts)Many grocery stores are open til 3 or 4 tomorrow. Walmart's Black Friday specials don't start until 6 pm. I believe you can only shop for groceries before then.

(8,003 posts)took a stand for gay couples by featuring them in ads. They were boycotted by RW-ers. Lots of people have to work on holidays, my mother always worked holidays and we worked around it. When I was a teen she regularly volunteered to work for those with little kids. To each his own, but I wouldn't boycott for this. JMHO.

(205,467 posts)The next time I bought something there I made a point of telling the young woman at the check out how much I liked the ads - and she agreed with me, said the employees got a chance to preview them
