Been to the store twice and I forgot cranberry sauce

I couldn’t go home without it thank goodness the dollar store came thru. This is the thirty first campaign/thanksgiving with my beautiful wife. She is all mission oriented to have another great thanksgiving for her family.

It's buy one get one free at most grocery stores around the holiday, and I only ever need one can. So I just buy one every two years.

we're going out. Wife did not inherit her mom's cooking skills but I love her anyway. Pretty sneaky though, bringing me to her parents house for supper on one of our first dates and letting me bask in the glory of her mom's cooking. MIL made TG dinners to rival a King's feast but sadly, she's no longer able to do that.

For shopping lists and for scheduling. Since it is accessible on our phones that means we don't have to remember a piece of paper - we just have to remember to put stuff on the damned list!

I can sit at the computer, look at the online weekly ads, plan menus, and make my lists on Cozi. Then he or I, whoever does the shopping, can access the same list on our phones.

It's also great for making appointments - we can check right at the time for conflicts and Cozi sends out a reminder every Sunday of the week's schedule.

We use the free version - http://www.cozi.com/ - the gold version costs a little, has no ads, and has more features - http://www.cozi.com/cozi-gold/ - but free does what we need.

Originally it was for my husband's family to schedule time with his mother in her last year, most of which was spent in the hospital and nursing home.

Since her death it has been great for keeping track of my doctor's appointments and various procedures. The shopping list is a great bonus!

My friend Bill who leads our bike rides also loves to cook. From his weekly news missive:
“Folks, I realize that I have my issues: It is important to wash your hands after you have touched ANYTHING; A clean drive train transforms a bike ride into a semi-religious activity; Don't dangle those prepositions; and, Cranberry sauce does not come out of a can at any table where I am serving food.

My mother always pushed that cylinder of congealed despair from the can, cut it into slices, following the handy diagram left by the can, and placed it on the dinner table, along with all those overcooked vegetables and rolls from frozen package!”

Not too opinionated our Bill.👹

Cranberries, orange juice, sugar, bit of cinnamon, simmer for 20 minutes on stove.

Save the extra to make cranberry orange bread Saturday.

(Okay, so it doesn't come out shaped like a tin can.)

Key lime is even easier to make than pecan pie. Recipe is on the bottle of key lime juice I buy at Publix.

1 pre-made graham cracker crust (the small ones aren't big enough and the big ones are too big)
1/2 cup of key lime juice (I just buy the stuff in the bottles)
5 egg yolks (left over from the meringue cookies)
1 can of sweetened condensed milk

Preheat oven to 350 F. Mix milk, eggs, and lime juice together until slightly thickened. Pour in to crust. Bake for fifteen minutes. Let cool, garnish with whipped cream.

Pecan pie:
Recipe on Karo Syrup bottle - EXCEPT:
1+ cup chopped pecans
double the vanilla extract
cut the sugar in half
use a deep dish pie shell

...
A&P has provided me
With the world's smallest turkey
Already in the oven, nice and hot
Oh damn! Guess what I forgot?

So on with the boots, back out in the snow
To the only all-night grocery,
When what to my wondering eyes should appear
In the line is that guy I've been chasing all year!

"I'm spending this one alone," he said.
"Need a break; this year's been crazy."
I said, "Me too, but why are you?
You mean you forgot cranberries too? "

Then suddenly we laughed and laughed
Caught on to what was happening
That Christmas magic's brought this tale
To a very happy ending! "

Have to get up early to get the turkey in the oven to have it done at the right time to make the 40 mile drive to my sister's why the turkey rests in the broiler in the trunk.

Dinner is scheduled for three, which means we won't eat until at least four. Thanksgiving dinners are never, ever at the time my sisters and mom say they will be... The announced time will generally interfere with something else one would prefer to do/watch, but never actually do because they are always late. The catch, of course, is the hell I will catch if >I< am late.

The only thing that I do outside that recipe is to put the stuffing UNDER the skin on the breast. I separate the skin by working my hand under it, and putting the stuffing under the skin. I use some of the apple maple butter to make the stuffing. The stuffing insulates the white meat and slows it downs, giving the dark meat a chance to get done before the white meat is dust.

I forgot, the apple cider maple syrup starts to smell like pumpkin to me as it starts to be reduced to the right point. Don't know why, just does.

I always buy 6 extra bags at thanksgiving and keep them frozen. My kids used to laugh at me but now they do the same. They come in handy during the year.

Luckily there are a few places that import them from the USA, and we loaded up in time. We can't even do the big dinner until tomorrow (Friday) anyway, since it's not a holiday here.

We talked to our elder daughter, 5000 miles away in Dallas, and my brother, 3500 miles away in Washington. So we're sort of celebrating. I spent 11 hours getting to and from work today, plus another 5 hours actually working when I got there, only to get thoroughly drenched by a torrential downpour while I was on the street 200 meters from my office. We aren't having our big dinner until tomorrow, but I was VERY happy to finally get back here! I got up at 4:30 AM, left at 5:20, and finally got back home at 9:20 PM. Not exactly your leisurely holiday schedule!
