This one doesn't look like he's interested in hunting anything if he can get a belly rub.

The large/wide meaty paw of the lynx is to allow the cat the ability to run in a field of deep accumulated snow to chase down the rabbit. The wide paw permits the lynx to keep it's leg and paw on the top surface of the snow during the hunt.

Kind of the same theory of walking in deep snow with just boots or with boots and snow shoes attached. The snow shoe permits your foot to stay much closer to the top surface and not fall through and get your feet and legs tangled and mired in the deep snow.

The wide meaty paw of the lynx serves the same purpose as the snow shoe - offering the ability to get around in deep snow with much less struggle.

Mother Nature/evolution must have an advanced degree in structural engineering.

Your 'Max' was born at a zoo in May 2011.
The 'Max' that died was 22 years old.

I'll delete my post.

Glad your Max is alive.

have you ever stroked a lynx coat? i had a brief gig at a country club in my younger days, long ago. one of the members who was a frequent flier at the bar got a new lynx coat, and let me touch it. it was amazing. like, as soft as a chinchilla, which i have only ever encountered alive. only deeper, and light as a feather. she said she had never had a warmer fur.
(yeah, gross. fur wasnt a thing back then. didnt want one of my own. but damn, it was amazing.)

coats, over the shoulders stoles, and fur hats for the very rich of Europe.

Rare bird populations were decimated to collect feathers for men' and ladies' fancy hat wear.

Chic apparel and status symbol attire have driven many species to the point of extinction. Much like trophy hunting is doing to rare species now. The Trump brothers exemplify the status symbol of killing for wall trophies, blood lust fun, and bragging rights at cocktail parties.
