One of my friends/coworkers is an even harder-core geek than I am, writing reviews semi-professionally for a local publication, and he saw an advance screening last night.
He described Star Wars: The Last Jedi as "Perfect," and he ranked it alongside The Empire Strikes Back.
He's no Force-addled fanboy, either. He liked Rogue One okay, hates the prequels, dislikes Jedi, and was lukewarm about The Force Awakens. He's also been spot-on (IMO) with reviews, both positive and negative, of other non-Star Wars films over the years.
So I'm inclined to listen when he praises something geek-related.
And, as always, I can't wait to read the flood of people rolling out with their predictable hatred of the film, along with the equally predictable throng who can't wait to tell us that they've never seen any Star Wars film and have no interest in them.

(63,215 posts)It's been a running joke in my family for years, that if they misbehave then I'm going to sit them down and force them to watch the whole series.
My own kids don't like Star Wars. Where did I go wrong?!?

(32,645 posts)Your kids were just born too late. My son grew up with Star Wars and he's seen them all several times. However HIS son (my grandson) could care less about SW, just like your kids. My grandson adores Harry Potter though.

(18,672 posts)Some people are very invested (understatement!) in the Star Wars universe and stick to canon as if it were the Bible. You have to read between the lines went it comes to Star Wars reviews. This one is going to be good. There will always be a large number of people who are disappointed. Im just going to sit back and enjoy.

(13,081 posts)Saw it with my wife and kid and son in law (mom says the first one was enough space stuff for her).
Havent been that hyped waking out of a Star Wars movie since the original.
Im here playing Battlefront 2 (because I am definitely a fanboy ) and it occurred to me that Finn was taken from his family as a child and pressed into service of the First Order, dissuaded from familial contacts, human emotions just like the Jedi were. The end goals are different, but there is no real difference.
We had to destroy the village in order to save it.

(38,317 posts)Of course my wife and I saw it Thursday, and there were a lot of people our age who'd been to the opening of the first in 1977.

(65,174 posts)I really liked The Force Awakens but would not put it up with the original 3. I think I will feel the same about this one, but who knows. Waiting to see it until next week - hoopla will die down a bit.
