Went to see the movie this morning. Two words - Totally awesome!
I could have sat through it a second time. I go on vacation next weekend and will have to consider going again.
Good cast
Good sub-plots
Just the right amount of humerous moments
Cuteness meter reading for critters - off the charts. Cutest critters of all the Star Wars movies.

Dont need cute. Funny/sarcasm is fine. Cute? Ugh

(63,215 posts)They don't save the day, they don't defeat the bad guys, and they aren't central to the plot.
A great improvement over Jar Jar & the Ewoks.

(11,257 posts)There was one scene towards the end when I was just sitting in the theater stunned, and completely confused as to what would happen next - let alone in the next movie.
If you really want to know, Wikipedia probably has the summary, but this is one movie where the theater experience was really cool.

(20,692 posts)they've created the next cast, and it's a good one.
Po is Luke, Rey is Leah, Finn is Han. I like it.
Cute, how Yoda got a scene. Anyone catch that last line about jedi? I couldn't catch it, with his wierd accent.

Only two good Star War films. A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, the second one only barely makes it. The rest were utter rubbish.
Haven't bothered with the new ones.

(63,215 posts)The Lucas prequels were indeed garbage. The other prequel, Rogue One, was surprisingly good.
You should "bother with" The Force Awakens when you get the chance. It's probably airing on some channel right now, in fact. It's faithful to the original trilogy and, while it breaks little new ground, it's an acceptable addition to the universe.
Here's the trick, though: you have to accept that it's an in-universe reboot. Half-assed critics marched in lockstep to condemn the film for being a rehash of the original Star Wars, but that complaint is only useful if we pretend that The Force Awakens was meant to be something other than it is.

(38,428 posts)I read the book, "Star Wars"...before I saw the first movie, and before the movie came out. Early June 1977.. There was no "New Hope..or belief that there would be more of them. ..So, I have a lot of experience with this.
I loved the first film, and the great feeling that I got coming out of that film with some friends. I think I saw it the 2nd or third week it was out. Long before it was the incredible success that it became.(saw it 7 times, in the movie theaters, no video tape in 1977)
When I saw the second one, second or third day out...I walked out of the theater, thinking..Oh well, there will be a third one, where this will all be settled....so............
I really want to feel good from one of these films. I really am not interested in some quirk messages or plot. Let's keep it simple, and to the point. ssssooooooooooooooo..
...I have read some reviews of this....and it has a quirk message and some plot twists that cause uncomfortable feelings.. some say it is great, some say it is poor, but it isn't a clear and simple film. Some say even that Disney has destroyed the franchise with this. I don't know..I will see it this nex week.
but I remember clearly, there were no "mixed reviews" with the first or third one. The second one, made us wait, but added to the story, and was worth the wait.....
This one...??? I will see and report back. But there is an uncertainty to what I have read about it.. And that makes me feel uneasy. Yes, I could see the last one again, (I didn't), but that is the essence of this. Would I watch it again?. Is it enjoyable enough?...Uncertainty..? I will find out in the next week.

Just outstanding in my view.
A few quibbles, but the good way, WAY outweighs the bad.

(20,692 posts)the frumpy asian woman. They seem to have gotten her back to medics alive, so, maybe she'll be in the next one. Worst movie kiss, ever, though. Really rough.
The "decoding expert" solved some plot problems, but didn't have the gravitas to be allowed into such an epic series.
The Hillary shoulder brush off was a personal attack on frump. Loved that. Got applause in my theater. Wonder how that went over in the south....probably right over their heads.
I'm not sure the whole Luke "ditch the jedi line" meme really made sense: also not at all sure I believe Ben would save Rey, but, at least we now know they're not cousins so it's ok for him to lust for her.....
Sets up a love triangle for the next film.
Love how Finn went for it at the end, both with the light saber and also flying into the cannon.
The whole "we can't get close enough to the carrier to fire on it until it runs out of fuel" was ridiculous. But, you need a lit fuse so that everyone's fighting against time.
Also not sure I can buy into why Ben needs to kill Luke so bad. I left feeling like the whole "dark side/destruction lust" meme is really played out. Why? Why does Ben want to rule the galaxy?
The giant dinosaur momma with the milk was disgusting and unnecessary. Shame on you, JJ. Seriously. Also, making fun of the little island caretakers was un-called-for. Some nasty cheap shots that did nothing for the emotions or the plot.
Also didn't get the scene where Rey stands near the "dark side in the water" thingy, with the unfinite number of Reys. That scene did nothing for the plot or her character arc, either. Did they really need that for her to want to leave ?
The last JJ film, Force Awakens was a much better film, but I wouldn't miss it. I'll probably buy it just for the music.
I k now the original soundtracks, and it seemed like 80% was just re-quilted from the previous films. Not sure there were new themes, there. Williams got the music credit but there were several other names up there for orchestration, etc.

(3,148 posts)Which is why I absolutely loved it. The only real negative thing I could think of is J.J. is doing IX. I fear he'll undo all the good Rian Johnson did to expand the Star Wars universe.

(6,399 posts)Jon Favreau gets listed as EP on lots of Marvel films even though he directed just the two Iron Man films. but he set the foundation. Same with Stan Lee being listed. It's not always indicative of actual involvement and Abrams said he had nothing to do with the film itself, just in some of the larger shepherding and the like on the backend.

(18,672 posts)Thank heavens I dismissed all the Star Wars "fans"/haters who seem to be enraged by this film and are lashing out at anyone who doesn't feel like they do. I enjoyed it so much I plan on seeing it again and normally don't watch movies more than once, even really good ones. There was too much to take in the first time. Some of the scenes were absolutely stunning (if you saw TLJ, you know which ones I'm talking about). The cinematography was gorgeous and I even enjoyed the evil characters. Mark Hamill, Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley gave amazing performances. It was bittersweet seeing Carrie Fisher again. All in all, I loved this movie and can't wait for the next installment.

(10,952 posts)I agree that there is a lot to digest in this film. I left the theater wanting to see the next movie - NOW! It will be hard to wait until 2019.

(6,399 posts)Those had plenty of allusions to Bush in power at the time but it feels even more chilling under Trump because it is so overt in both film and reality for the viewer combined with the sense of powerlessness.

(23,322 posts)Loved it! Daisy Ridley is just great...she is such a bad ass. I'm still curious who her parents are. Kylo Ren kept telling Rey she was a nobody and so were her parents...I don't believe that. Regardless, lots of good old fashioned Star Wars action that never quit. Heroes at every turn. Lots more humor than I expected. I'll dissect it more when I see it a second time.

(17,863 posts)At first I thought it would be formulaic rehash of Empire (just like The Force Awakens was of A New Hope). Definitely not. Many twists and turns to the plot. It is getting a lot of heat from many long time Star Wars fans, but I am not seeing it. I can see legitimate reasons for everything that happened (with the exception of the casino interlude which, while fun, was entirely inappropriate to the rest of the plot progresion). The space chase scene could have been rewritten to cover several plot holes.
lindysalsagal
(20,692 posts)3/4 way through I was thinking that clearer, more judicious writing would have streamlined the plot and poured more heat into the question of which way Ben would ultimately go: But he's so ambiguous, and I still don't buy his motivation: Ok, ok, Anakin (Vader) had the same nihilistic power lust, but, at the same time, Ben doesn't seem to think these other non-jedi are worth the trouble. So, it's not quite got the power of good and evil that I'd like.
I did like the statement about the rich people selling arms to the bad guys, and having no soul. Those casino critters were pathetic.

(18,672 posts)It seemed to be necessary to show how the elite were funding the war on both sides, while living in luxury off of the profits, far removed from the rebellion. I hope to see much more of Finn more in the last episode. He is extremely likable and brings a lot of fun, boisterous energy to the film.
No one is mentioning Kylo Ren's incredible piloting skills in the multitude of online reviews and re-hashing of favorite scenes in the movie (on the internets, not here). That scene went by so fast which is yet another reason for a re watch. Some people think he is a weak villain but he seems to be one of those characters that excels at everything externally while being the opposite internally. I'm loving it! It's a fascinating dichotomy to watch. I hope this is the end of villains being depicted as one-dimensional mouth breathers.

(6,907 posts)probably my least favorite
And I was a die-hard fan from the beginning.
It was good to see Mark and Carrie in it, and I thought Mark, in particular, did a great job. But I will probably forget everything else about this movie in a week.
It was like looking over someone's shoulder while they played a Star Wars game on an X-Box.

(63,215 posts)It's become fashionable to criticize The Force Awakens for being too similar to the original film, as if this wasn't the film's clear intent. Critics complained that it was "familiar" and didn't show us anything new.
Well, The Last Jedi sure as hell shows us plenty that's new, and to great effect. It's the first Star Wars film that truly had me saying "Shit! Now what's going to happen?" It's remarkable that a 40-year-old franchise can generate that kind of tension, surprise, and excitement.
The principal cast is admirably diverse, with four (four!) strong female characters. I was surprised and pleased that even the storytelling structure showed a few key departures from what we've seen before.
A very solid addition to to the series.

(10,857 posts)Laura Dern was friggin' *awesome* and the film actually had a perfect opportunity to transition from Princess Leia to Admiral Holdo. I assume that too much had already been put into the production to allow for a rewrite that changed those two characters' roles.
Yo, SW writers: Dern could be brought back. Her command chair might be a couple of light years away, having passed through the enemy fleet. She had what, like ten lines in the entire film and she knocked every one of them out of the park. Give her back!

(61,695 posts)I must have missed a few transitions. Did the Decoder (played by B. Del Toro) overhear the rebel fleet talking to Finn and Rose about the transport ships going to the mining planet? How did the Decoder know what to tell Capt. Phasma, Gen. Hux, etc, to betray Rose and Finn?
How did Rey get from Snoke's red room to the Millenium Falcon after she and Kylo battled the praetorian guard? Do we just assume Chewy got on the cruiser and picked her up?

(5,914 posts)Of all the Star Wars movies, it was the first ever where I found myself looking at my watch and saying to myself, "Jesus Christ, there are still 45 minutes left?!! How many goddamn endings does this movie have?!"
It seemed like about 20 action set pieces strung together with no compelling plot or rising tension. And did we HAVE to have ANOTHER cantina scene and Falcon chase through a "tunnel of death". How many fucking times have they done that? Each one has been in at least three movies now.
That's just my opinion. Kids and adults with ADHD will most certainly like it. As for me, I believe it will be my last Star Wars movie.

(45,488 posts)explaining things than showing us things. For example, the scene when Ben Solo supposedly killed Luke's students and escaped. Or the lame scene with Maz Kanata.
Instead of fan service, why not go back to Lucas's love of Kurosawa and old movie serials? Move the action along and stop lionizing every character.

(5,914 posts)Instead of doing the hard work to make any kind of compelling story, they put together a Star Wars soup.
I told my wife that it was like watching our friend next door play a great game of Star Wars Battlefront--with a bunch of cutscenes from all the movies thrown in--for two and a half hours. I guess that's kind of neat to see. But worth the time to sit there and watch? No.
I forgot about Maz Kanata. How useless was that? I guess they needed to include that in the soup, since there was so much else going in.

(37,748 posts)I'm really enjoying the new series. I put Force Awakens up there with New Hope, and Last Jedi on the same plane as Jedi. Maybe the only "huh?" moment I had was the Las Vegas-like city, but it didn't take anything away from the film.
I'm super excited for the next installment as Abrams is directing it. What he did in the first film of both the Star Wars and Star Trek series really awakened the latent fan-boy in me that's been dormant and apathetic since the mid-eighties, so I'm happy to see he's finishing the new trilogy as well.
Kennedy and Abrams know pretty much what I want, and they're giving it to me for the price of admission. As long as Disney keeps this up (along with the Avengers franchise) the only thing I can say to them is, "here.... take my money!!!"
Obviously I'm not quite as evolved (read: pedantically overly-critical simply to convince myself I'm clever) as I used to be, so I can much more easily and organically enjoy a good story without getting lost in the pop/psych culture zeitgeist of it.
