Nothing that we don't already know about dysfunctional cultures continuing that dysfunction generation by generation. However, the fact that one person could rise out of that and achieve incredible success, due to special people who supported and guided him over the years, gives one hope.

OTOH, how is that scaleable? If you have 50 kids in that grade at that school, how do you get each of them the individual support they need? In his environment, many will be from dysfunctional homes. How do you take a large percentage of these kids, multiplied by the number and the number of years necessary, to help them overcome their environment?

I see this situation around here in East Tennessee and after 20 years here, I have no answers. Against outsiders, against education, some tied to fundamentalist religions, serious drug and alcohol use, multiple marriages/divorces/living arrangements, etc.
