That might sound like a no-brainer to the smart people of DU, but I drive for a living and you'd be surprised about how many people I see out there pushing the speed when road conditions are bad. I think the advent and popularity of all wheel drive cars is in part to blame. People have that four wheel drive going on and they think they can drive however they please in the snow. Not so.
I was driving in a snow storm tonight for about 250 miles. There weren't many people out on the road being the middle of the night. The right lane was partially clear and I was weighed down pretty good. I felt comfortable doing about 55. The left lane, however was completely covered with snow pack. Out of nowhere came this mini-van doing about 75 mph in the left lane and blew my doors off. All I could do was shake my head.
I stopped for a little bit to go to the bathroom and then got back on the road. About 20 miles down the road I ran across that mini-van again. It looked as if it had rolled multiple times and had come to rest in the right ditch on the driver's side facing the opposite direction of traffic. Talk about a wild ride. Emergency personnel were just getting to the scene.
That mini-van had out-of-state plates. You know what I think this time of year when I see a mini-van tooling down the road with out-of-state plates? There is a family on board. I hope everyone made it okay.

(17,865 posts)Never understood it. I used to travel in the winter (Iowa) to Louisiana, Florida, or West Virginia to visit family (I have the time off from Christmas Eve to day after New Years). I don't do that anymore. I actually have enough vacation that, when it snows, I just take it.

(10,418 posts)At least you have the internet to keep you occupied. Just think back to the old days before cell phones, lap tops, and wireless communications.
My wife was saying that Erie has 7 feet of snow on the ground.
